The ways of a PR consultancy

I started my placement at the beginning of March at a public relations consultancy in West Perth. So far my placement has been a great learning experience.

In my placement I have not been given one single project or task to complete each day (like some of you have reported) but instead I have assisted with a number of projects, which differ each day depending on what the consultants in my consultancy are working on. This experience has proven to be slightly difficult as each client, project and industry is vastly different and therefore requires significant research and reading, although it has opened my eyes to the way consultancy’s have to work.

Some of my tasks so far have included; research for a competitor analysis, meeting with a client at the proposed venue for their event, drafting a quarterly report, drafting media releases, organising the consultancy’s staff dinner and giving recommendations to a client about their website. This is in addition to proof reading and formatting a variety of material.

I came into this placement believing that working for a consultancy would have a variety of benefits including being able to ask for assistance from fellow employees. This has proven to be true in terms of communication techniques, idea generation and generally assisting each other, even though clients vary between consultants, everyone working here is more than happy to work together as a team.

Although my placement began a little slower than I expected (has anyone else experienced this?), it is gaining momentum and I look forward to becoming more involved in the organisation over the next few weeks of my placement.
