As my internship is coming to an end, I would have to say my experiences in the past few months have been amazing. The amount of new skills I have gained over this short period of time has allowed me to gain confidence, experience, a greater understanding and a greater understanding of how Public Relations units can apply to a PR role within an organisation.
The most important skill I have taken with me from this internship is the skill of time management. As the expectations and tasks that I would expect to endure during my stay with Pigeonhole, I kept a diary to ensure that I could manage both my university work and my internship workload.
I have managed to develop new skills to plan ahead and work within a self-given deadline. This kept me focused and helped me ensure that the quality and timeliness of my work were both up to scratch.
I have noticed that writing down every little detail you are given helps with the final task. Sometimes the smallest details may help you along the way. This was evident in my internship through the task of composing a media clippings book. I remember Martina telling me to read the articles that I encounter and notice which magazines I was reading from. This helped me across the entire internship as it enabled me to develop a greater understanding of the organisation and tailor my writing more relevantly to Pigeonhole’s style.
Every bit of work I was given was more than just a task, it was an opportunity to enhance my current skills, and develop new skills. As I was confident in my administrative skills to begin with, the internship has led me to realise that there a lot of areas to learn even in the most basic Microsoft office applications. This has been a great learning experience for me, and has definitely prepared me better for the real world. I have no regrets in my decision to take up my internship with this organisation and It feels great to be given responsibilities that could relate back to my degree.
