Hi guys!
This is my last blog entry in regards to my PR393 internship at Boulevard Restaurant Miri. My internship ended on 30th April 2010. I've learnt a lot of works that relate to my Public Relations units such as, PR200 (Techniques) which teaches me how to write a professional media kits like media release, backgrounder and fact sheet, budget, and advertising. PR200 also teaches us how to design brochure, advertisement and so on. PR250 (Media), teaches how to deal with the media and PR300 (Consultancy) teaches how to deal with clients, the professionalism in writing report and the importance of time management so that we can meet deadlines and complete our tasks on time. Furthermore, PR393 (Professional Practice) gave me the opportunity to challenge myself to have a professional real life internship and I realize how important to handle every single task that is given to me.
A week before the end of my internship, I was asked to prepare letter to be sent to various associations in Miri, such as, Foo Chow Association, Teo Chew Association, Hokkien Association, Hai Nan Association and so forth. The said letter was about the upcoming dinner set promotion for their association's events and functions. It also provided them with updated information on latest dishes available at Boulevard Restaurant. The purpose is to inform and to create awareness among the associations on the Boulevard Restaurant's latest dishes. From my internship experience, I learnt it is crucial to address the needs and concerns of the publics, keeping a "forgotten public" informed and how to reach the objective of Boulevard Restaurant.
My participation in organising various events, dinner and promotion of new dishes of Boulevard Restaurant enables me to understand the importance of public relations in contemporary society. I realised the significance of adhering to the standard of ethics when engaging in PR profession. It is also important to have complete analysis and understanding of all the factors that would influence the publics' perception toward the Boulevard Restaurant. During my internship, me and my manager often deal with media representatives for producing and disseminating news to them. I learnt the importance of budget in relation to media release, production of brochures and advertisement. When participating in promoting new dishes, I had opportunity to deal with the local newspapers' reporter.
During my internship at Boulevard Restaurant, time management is critically important. I'd to make arrangement of my time so that I would manage to complete all the given tasks within the stipulated period. Being a full time student at Curtin University, Miri and a part time PR/Event officer at Boulevard Restaurant, I need to plan and manage my time effectively and efficiently so that I can meet all deadlines for all my tasks at Boulevard Restaurant as well as my courses' assignments. Hence, creating a timeline and developing plans to meet the time due are vital to public relations professional.
As I mentioned on previous blog entry, my seniors and managers are incredibly helpful and generous to share their knowledge and experience with me. I've learnt and gained invaluable practical experience. I'd the opportunity to apply my theoretical PR knowledge that I've learnt in the practical working life-situation. The experiences have been very rewarding and provide me opportunity for professional and personal development. For examples, the practical experiences have enhanced my writing, planning techniques, public relations tactics and time-management skills.
I'm delighted to work at Boulevard Restaurant where I've gained useful and colourful practical PR experience at the same time meeting some new friends who have been supportive throughout my internship period. It is a huge honour to work at Boulevard Restaurant with these fantastic people including my boss, managers, seniors and colleagues.
Last but not least, I would like to say that public relations profession is extremely challenging. From my internship experience, I understand that the importance of message to create awareness of the public about the programs/events of the business/organisation.
Hope you all have a fascinating internship experience. Have a nice day!
