What have I learnt so far in my placement? Time management is so SOOOOOOO important! And all of those little tips and hints our lecturers have been telling us for the last 3 years that we've just rolled our eyes at, we really should have listened.
I'm doing two internships, for two different units/companies and I think sometimes I spend more time planning what I'm going to do and when I'm going to do it, rather than actually doing it. Completing these internships has really forced me to become better at time management and become a more efficient worker... Which is definitely not a bad thing! I think what has really helped me is to keep a big (and colourful) "To Do" list pinned up on the wall infront of my desk, right in my line of vision. This way I know what I've done, when I did it, what I've got to do etc. By using colours I can categorise and prioritise too. Sounds very primary school I know, but it helps so much. And it is such a good feeling to tick off a task when it's been completed!
I'm currently working on a couple of really hands on tasks. I'm working on a media release that's hopefully going to end up as a news article. I'm also working on a phone script to call local schools and get them on board with a competition my organisation is running. They're my two priority tasks at the moment.
Creativity is quickly becomming a massive part of my internship. I don't know if it's a coincidence, or maybe I'm just picking up on it a bit more because of the recent lecture on Creativity. Either way if I didn't see the importance of Creativity in PR before, I'm defintiely seeing it now. Coming up with catchy names, writing a stand out media release, attracting media attention and also attracting individual and corporate sponsorship; and that's just the last week or two.
I'm defnitely learning a lot though, and this placement is really helping me to realise what I like, my strengths and weaknesses etc. and giving me a better idea of where I would like to head career wise.

ey Nikki! I know what you mean by time management is soooo important! I realised that too! I struggled at the beginning of my internship..I was working everyday until 5pm and couldnt keep up with my other units.. So I did the same thing as you.. a huge "to-do-list"! And since then, I managed to catch up on everything! Which I thought would've been impossible 4 weeks ago!
I also agree with you concerning the creativity side of public relations, I never thought it was so important in PR, but by writing these media releases, creating a Facebook profile, think about a strategic plan to raise awareness, you really do see the importance of being creative and unique in order to obtain what you want!
I'm still learning something new everyday, I'm really happy that we all had the opportunity to do an internship! =)! Everyone has different stories, experiences but they are all interesting! anyway...
Gdluck for your report!=)
Clo
Thanks, I'm glad someone else agrees!!
Good luck for the finishing off of your report too and the rest of your internship if you have any time left :)
hi nikky!
yeah i completely agree, time management is fundamental in the PR field. i was so used to procrastinating when i had assignments to do but during the internship i got the opportunity to learn how to manage my time as the real life PR is not just like the assignments we have. same goes for creativity. while being on internship we do not really have a unit outline to guide us, i have been organising the World Water Day conference while being on my internship and i had only two meetings with my supervisor.
just like Clo said, its only when we have to do the work that we realise how bein creative is important.
good luck for your report!
Ashvani!
