My first week at Sunset Events

I was full of a mixture of nervousness and excitement as I ventured the hour and a half bus ride to the Sunset Events office. Once there, I was met by the administration and events co-ordinator. She gave me a short tour of the building (a massive shed situated in the industrial area of Fremantle… near the golf course) and led me out the back to where I found my boss and another lady who was over from Sydney to set up the One Movement festival. By set up, I mean, do all the menial administration type stuff like drawing up playing times. I was soon to be met by one of the Director's who came in and out of the office a few times throughout the day to talk to my boss about PR type stuff.

My tasks for the day included familiarising myself with the website, setting up a contacts database for the One Movement festival and creating a promotional plan for the Murdoch University Open Day (something I didn’t even realise Sunset Events ‘repped’).

I got a bit scared when I was asked to do the promotional plan. I wasn’t sure what my boss had meant by ‘brief’ and when I asked, she didn’t answer properly, she just reiterated what she had originally said. You see, in the music industry there are two types of promotional plans. There are the ones that you give to the venue booker to shut them up about how you're going to get the word out about your event and there's the one that we've all grown accustomed to during our studies. I did the latter version.

All in all, my first day was great. A few glitches but that was to be expected. I’d been waiting for this day for what seems like forever (about 14 years or so). My first day as an in-house Publicity Assistant in the music industry, let alone the company that organises my two favourite music festivals this side of the Nullabor, had been and gone. Now, on to day two.

On Friday, I cross-checked more album release dates against the Southbound line-up to see who was releasing albums between now and then so that we could get the record labels to tag them with a mention of the bands playing the festival. I also came up with a name for a Sunset Events promo that we’re running where people can win 2 x VIP tickets to all 10 festivals that Sunset Events promote. It was a pretty quiet day as the boss was away at a meeting for most of the day.

Today was a lot busier. The Southbound website and line-up go live on Wednesday morning so the day was spent editing artist bio's, making a checklist to see what needed to be added to the website and uploading whatever needed to be uploaded - lot's of YouTube videos and press photos.

I left today thinking that it was going to be hard going back to the harsh reality of being a student once my placement was finished. A pretty good sign, even if I do say so myself.
