Property Wrap Up

So this is my final blog and I have officially left the Property Council, not only as an internship but where I was as a part-time job. My supervisor and boss Damian decided to move on after being there for 7 years and start his own property research company. As I was working as his PR assistant, I also no longer have a paid role at the organisation.

While it is always sad to close a chapter I feel ready to move on to my next job opportunity (whatever that may be!) and begin discovering what aspects of PR I enjoy the most and wish to pursue further.

I have been at the Property Council since early last year. My time there began when I was doing work experience for Tanya Steinbeck, director of Limelight Communications. I met Tanya when I sent out a big bunch of emails requesting work experience and proceeded to hunt her down because I had heard she was someone great to learn from. My hunting succeeded and we began the work relationship after a coffee date.

At the time, the Property Council were commissioning Tanya as the Events and Communications Manager and she was working out of their office one day per week. I did work experience for Tanya from the Property Council office, which is how I met the staff. An assistant position came up for Damian and I was the obvious choice because I was already in the office and knew information about the company. This is one of those examples of having luck on my side with getting the job!

The Property Council has taught me many things. I have learnt not only about PR but what the corporate world can be like (the good and bad of it), how to be the best employee I possibly can and what my strengths are. I have performed an array of tasks from media releases, market surveys, newsletters, event coordination and preparation, drafting emails and fliers, as well as mundane tasks such as databases and creating excel spreadsheets.

As I am writing over my report I feel a real sense of achievement of the types of activities I’ve done, and the real world feels less scary somehow! Having great mentors has definitely made this process easier and allowed me to always get the most out of my work experience.

I really hope you all enjoyed your work experience as much as I have, and even if you haven’t that you have learnt more about public relations and yourselves.
