One of Therapy Focus's community initiatives which I got to be a part of is called Sunny's School Roadshow. Here, Sunny, the company mascot visits schools and community centres all around Perth's metro area. Accompanied by someone from the organization, they give a ten minute presentation and Sunny gets to interact with the crowd.
One of my first tasks at Therapy Focus was to actually dress up and be Sunny, which was definitely an experience. Thinking about it now I laugh my head off because I had such a terrible phobis for mascots in general. I have always thought they were weird and freaky, and couldn't stand beinf next to one or even be within 200m of one. Four Months ago I came across the Bucking Bull mascot at one of the local shopping centre, I was shaking so badly when I saw it, and I pretty much ran in the opposite direction.
Back to Sunny.....
Seeing as this was one of my first tasks I had to do, I would say I pretty much challenged myself to take it on, and face my fears. I really didn't want to give off the vibe that I didn't really want to be there or anything like that.
I got so enthusiastic about the whole idea of me being in a massive sunflower suit, I went off telling everyone I knew about it, and really made it sound like it was one of those things you just HAD TO TRY before you left uni, or before you hit 25, or something along those lines.
On my first school visit, the person who was actually doing the speaking only asked one thing of me... "Please don't be a boring Sunny". This got me all nervous because I really wondered what previous Sunnys had done to be EXCITING. My solution to this was simply act like an IDIOT, act like a total idiot and don't hold back.... no one knows it's you in the really massive sunflower anyway... so why not?? This worked like such a charm, once I got on the stage I was chanting to myself, 'I AM THE SUNFLOWER', which didn't do much but got me into a really animated zone.
After the school assembly a local community newspaper was at the school , and ended up writing a story about the school's students who were part of Therapy Focus's art competition which involved more than 100 schools in Perth. This got Therapy Focus some great (free) exposure.
At the end of the day I had such a great time going everything, and felt really happy I got to be a part of it all.
So guys you have to try something different, I suggest dornning a super siezed sunflower always gets some interesting attention!!
Cheers

I totally understand how you feel. I was terribly nervous during my first event, wasn't sure if I could do a good job. But it turns out well too! Hurray to us=)))
