The Young UNiFEM only started off in Perth about two years back, but despite being fairly new they have achieved quite a bit and have gained massive recognition from the UNiFEM National Australian Committee. On the 14th of October, we organized the Eat Pray Love Charity Screening at Ace Cinemas, Subiaco to raise funds for our Spring Campaign. The profits raised were all channelled towards our non-formal education project in Laos to help increase the rate of literacy amongst women.
So my job prospect for this project included alot of pre-planning as well as some post event work. I met up with Martina, the Head of Media & Communications on Tuesday and briefed me on what I had to do. Here were the list of things on my plate :
a. Stitch 120 white ribbons (think the Breast Cancer Awareness ribbons, only white) to be stuck on 120 promo cards about our upcoming event on the 25th of November 2010, the White Ribbon Day.
b. Prepare a post-media release to be sent off the day after the event.
I was eager to start and figured how hard would it be to stitch 120 white ribbons and stick them on promo cards, right? Nope, totally wrong! I stayed up the whole night, freaked out because I dint know how to sew, had to get a friend to teach me over the phone and finally got the hang of sewing. The next day, I had a little bit of problems with the printing of the promo cards because the resolution of the jpeg file sent to me was not high enough, so back and forth between emails and I finally got the printing done. Tegan, the Head of Events called me up asking if I could swing by Danza Loca on Manning Road to pick up some Zumba vouchers they were giving us for the showbags so I had to run down Manning Road from where I live (which is thankfully only 4 minutes down the street!), pick those up, came home and quickly got changed to head for Subiaco.
A pre-party was held at Pure Bar for the first 100 people to arrive and a Raffles Draw just before the movie. As I had already watched the movie, I left halfway through to catch the last bus home, also so I could head home and start working on the media release. I was rather nervous as it would be the first release I was writing here in Australia, yes I've writen a large number of media releases in Malaysia - but I was afraid the standards would be very different.
Lucky for me, my supervisor loved what I gave her! :)
My next task, which is going to take up alot of this week is to write a pre-media releast, fact sheet and backgrounder for the White Ribbon Day, which for those of you who are unaware is a campaign against violence towards women.
