Through my experience at FESA, I have begun to see the specific skills that PR professionals must possess to be productive within this industry. Although, these skills have been highlighted and honed within my university PR units, I have begun to value their importance by viewing them within the workplace. The specific skills that I have witnessed first hand are;
- Ability to write and speak well
- Diplomacy
- Strong spelling and understanding of grammar
- Professional attitude when dealing with stakeholders
- Research and analytical skills
- Problem solving skills
- Initiative
- Ability to meet deadlines
Now I have highlighted these skills, I appreciate that I have to try harder within my duties to strengthen these attributes within myself, as these are what are viewed positively within the industry.
Finally, I have come to the end of my crisis communication plan for the event of Tsunami in Australia. I can now begin to implement some of my awareness strategies.
Within my completed communication plan I have decided to include these separate sections; Background, SWOT analysis, Objectives, Target audience, Key messages, Stakeholders, Statistics, Barriers/risks, Media Strategies, Incident specific strategies and Evaluation.
The decision to include these specific sections came from analysing other hazard communication plans such as storm season and cyclone. I identified there different strength based on the information that I wanted to communicate on tsunamis.
Now that the plan has been created to a fairly strong level, I can begin to concentrate on implementing my strategies. The communication strategies that I will start creating are;
- Media coverage by writing and issuing news releases and media statements, for different media outs
- Writing, editing and arranging production of tsunami webpage on the FESA website (as current website is being renovated http://www.fesa.wa.gov.au/internet/default.aspx?MenuID=372
- Writing, editing and arranging production of articles in publications such as brochures and magazines
So bye for now and hopefully the next time you see me, which will be soon, I have a bunch of strategies implemented. :)
