Hello, it's Sara again, a pr student who's working for a political party, SUPP. On 23rd of March, Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof announced the polling dates will commenced on the 16th of April 2011. Since the announcement, each contesting party will have campaign period of nine days. Within that 9 days, I experienced a lot of exciting things such as meeting the citizen face to face, sneaking in to hear the opposition speeches, war banner, being a keyboard warrior and such. It was whole lot of fun with of course mixed feelings like excited and at the same time feeling fear of losing the state election.
The most interesting part about election is the war of banners. The first day of campaigning, Miri City is full of our (SUPP) banners and billboards which stated positive and nice things about the leaders and what did they contribute during their leaderships. And suprisingly, we can only see 4-5 billboards by DAP (our competitor). I was very positive about this election, saying that DAP in this city is not that strong.
The next day when I drive myself to town, I saw 60% of DAP banners was up and saying harsh things about SUPP. I was quite suprise and their tactic is to observe our banner was like. Red word at bottom left: "If Taib don't fall, citizens will eat grass."
translation: Vote Taib = Vote Old Dog, Turn down Taib = Kill Old Dog.. When will these old dogs will be killed? This banner was taken down on the next day by the police.
Okay, one thing about the opposition banners is the use of word are very harsh and rude. I just thought that it is inappropriate to use that kind of word to attack SUPP. It shows how unprofessional the party is. Two days later, Dr Hew Kuan Yau, one of DAP leader were caught insulting SUPP and the Sarawakian by calling them Orang Utan. SUPP protested to ask him to apologise publicly. According to thestar.com, a local newspaper wrote thatDAP’s campaign style is modelled after that in Taiwan; where practices fearless kind of street politics, where the people are projected as the boss who should not be afraid to hold those in power accountable for their actions.
Whatever it is, communication is very important to send the right message to the right public. This also have something to do with corporate reputation and corporate image. DAP is known for their gangsterism and rude speeches and people expected it but it seems like they do not care about their reputation and image.
