Organizing a concert is always something exciting and the following post will try to explain to you how I organized a concert within one week. A very hectic week to say with the meeting of the organization board to decide what was the theme of the concert, and the venue. I can modestly say that I suggested the theme of the concert which was ‘Les jeunes chantent les droits humains’ (The youngsters sing human rights) and the venue was decided to be in the hall of the Saint Esprit College in Quatres Bornes, a relatively small hall when you look at it, but we were not expecting more than 300 persons. This concert was organized in order to raise funds for Amnesty International, gain new memberships and be able to show that there are talents within the youth club of Amnesty Mauritius.
I was to come up with a nice picture and to design the poster which would be used. I was also in charge of taking pictures of the concert. I did not do photography as a module, and for me it is a passion. I do not even own a professional camera, but sometimes I do take pictures with my friends’ camera, and I try to learn from them whether it is possible.
So there we are in this hall, after I created an event on facebook about this concert, we could feel the stress of the staff of Amnesty International, but for the artists who were relatively young with an average age of 18, they were at ease. I was expecting much more coverage from the press but I only got response from the local newspaper L’express who made coverage on their website. But the fact that there were no journalists did not discourage the enthusiasm of the artists present. Music ranging from Imagine of John Lennon to Poupee de Cire, Poupee de son from France Gall, the choice of songs did reach all the categories of age of persons there. The young artists during the whole concert had a connection with the public. The concert was expected to last for 3 hours but it went on for four hours, singing, dancing and ending with the local dance the ‘sega typique’ with dancers. I had the opportunity of taking pictures for my first event. I did post some pictures of facebook on the official fan page of the Amnesty. Pictures were also taken for the “Milles Visages contre la peine de mort” campaign of Amnesty International.
It was a really nice experience for me that I hope I will get the opportunity to do it again.

Nice to see your post. Wihout see your name on it, I instantly saw your picture!Great!so what i wanted to say was actually I did not know about the concert but seem to be nice and surely you have a great experience. Although you did not have any media present during the event, is nice to hear that L'express coved the event on their website. and creating the event on Facebook was actually a good initiative. What you could have done was to also pass the message though the Radio in program such as in Lindley's show...he whom you like so much! Or even design a brochure or fliers and distribute them to CTI for example. Moreover I can say that being you who got the idea of the concert theme: "The youngsters sing human rights", i definitely recognizes you in there.

Congrats for your event. I saw your pictures on Facebook and they are just great. It should have been such a satisfaction for you to witness the concert's progress from A to Z.
Online networking sites like Facebook target only a particular audience in Mauritius and hence, did Amnesty advertise prior the concert's date? Maybe it would have helped to raise the journalists' awareness and interest for the media coverage. In addition to that, distribution of flyers and placing posters in strategic town places also could have helped for the concert.
Another idea was to send media kits to each press group, including a media release covering the event and fotos for instance.

First of all congrats for organising such an event especially when it is for a good cause. In a country like Mauritius where poverty prevails and children are mistreated due to the family's lack of education or any other reasons, children's rights have to be put forward. Anything related to children is usually something that touch people and triggers emotions.
Also a good aspect of the PR job is when you can mix your passion with your profession. As you said photography is a passion for you, and the communication field allows you to use it. For me, fashion, trends and art are passions. In PR and communication you are asked to use your creative skills for the update of websites for example or layout of magazines, this is where my artistic fiber is used.
