This is it!

So this is it, the end is here, my internship with West Coast Radio is complete. I say my internship is complete as it is, my 20 days were completed quite a few days ago, yet I am happy to say that I am still working with the wonderful radio station. With the completion of my final report, appraisal sent off and internship days covered, it all comes down to this final blog post.

My time spent with West Coast Radio has been amazing, I have grown to love the people I work with and agree that if you enjoy the people you work with and the work you do, you will always look forward to waking up and going to work to make some great achievements. I have found myself to be well-like by the listeners and have become famous on our Coast Live facebook page and website as Coast FM’s very own Lady Gaga due to a celebrity costume party we had. A lot of laughs were had, and many friendships and connections were formed; as well as the most valuable reward, a job after the internship.

Working with West Coast Radio has opened my eyes to the marketing and public relations industry, it can get extremely hectic but when the event or competition is over and you have seen your work in action and how it has succeeded and impressed your clients and colleagues, it makes everything worthwhile. It makes it even worthwhile when your efforts are appreciated and expressed during work events such as our ‘End of Month’ drinks and our annual Cocktail Gala Night. Having your efforts acknowledged is of great importance within an organisation, as I believe it makes you work a lot harder, strive for success, and increase your productivity, which will ultimately benefit the organisation itself. So there really is no reason why companies should not acknowledge the success of their staff.

Three of the main things that I have learnt during the course of my internship with West Coast Radio would have to be:

Pick up the phone – Don’t just talk to your client via email, pick up the phone and call them. Arrange a time and place to meet and get to know them and all their needs and wants in order to make their experience with the company worthwhile. If the client is willing to spend a lot of their money by advertising and marketing themselves with your company, make sure they are as satisfied as can be. This is not only benefiting the client, but the company as well. The company not only receives adequate payment for their work but may also receive a loyal and valuable, long-term client.

‘C’ is for Communication – Times can get stressful and hectic when working in a fast-paced, ever-changing industry. Get to know who your working with, build close relationships with those people and when times get tough, communicate. Yes the big ‘C’ word that often gets forgotten. When you have built relationships with your colleagues, during tough times you can take a step back and relax. These people are here to support you and within a healthy workplace these people will help you to take time to laugh a little, stress less, gather your thoughts and get back in to it. Things will work out and with the help of communication and friendly work colleagues; it will work out, a lot quicker.

Blog, Comment, Like, Post and Interact – Online social networking is a must! Everything from having an up-to-date interactive website to an informative, attractive and social, facebook page. In an industry such as radio, station to listener two-way communication is essential! It not only helps the station to gain support and to see who’s listening, but also helps the listeners to feel included and involved in the operations of the station. Having an area where listeners can directly interact with announcers helps to create a relationship and encourages listeners to become involved in the stations activities, such as competitions, events and giveaways. It also helps to create a network where information can be distributed to a large number of people in a short period of time. For instance, not everyone may be listening to the radio at one period of time, but they may be connected to a device that allows them to access information from the station, such as a computer, mobile phone or portable device. This comes in great hand during times of community crisis such as bush fires and floods, all of which our station and community have seen over the past 12 months.

Communication is the key, and by finding a way to communicate effectively with your all your stakeholders as well as your colleagues, you are on the right track to success.

Work hard; strive for success, have some fun along the way and you will go far!

Thank you to those who have read my blog and followed my internship along the way, I wish you all the very best in the future! :)

Very true Rebecca, its important to get to know your client. Calling them once in a while or taking a client out for lunch shows that you are indeed serious about that client.Where I was doing my internship every friday they took one of the clients or media person out for lunch just to show appreciation and trust me it does good for the company

Rebecca, thank you for your informative and entertaining blogs. What a great placement you have had!

I was lucky like you to have a very friendly place for my internship.

It makes a huge difference to work within a supportive environment. This is the second placement I have done, and I must say even though the work was very different (one was a football club, and one a government department) my happiness and enjoyment at work was largely derived from the atmosphere.
One was supportive and the other competitive...and it completely surprised me to see which way round it was!
I know that not all work places will be supportive, and it is important to have strength of character- but it has made all the difference for this internship and I am so thankful that I was with such a great bunch of women!
