Finally have an Internship!

Hi Everyone,

I have just spent the last 20 minutes reading everyone else’s posts to find out what I’m meant to be writing about, oh yeah this is my first post. Well to start off with my name is Meagan Philpot. I’m doing a double major in PR and tourism management, so when we had to find a PR placement I was more looking towards the tourism industry. But that proved a little harder to get into, and after calling and leaving message after message at different places I finally decided to go with a different approach.

Through the work experience link on blackboard I found an advertisement for Via Appia Networking, and applied for it. I received an email the next day asking for me to call them, once I got over my nerves I dialled the number and it was a quick interview to ask when I can come in for my proper interview. My interview was on Friday and I found out later that day that I got the internship, which was a big sigh of relief!

Prior to my interview I researched about them on their website, they focus on four main services event management, social media marketing, networking management and managed services. So it ranges from creating and hosting networking events to running business development workshops to managing social media for clients.

My first Day
When I walked in Lucy, my supervisor, gave me a grand tour and introduced me to the others, (they make up a workforce of 3). After getting settled, Lucy explained of an event coming up, “Fashion Icon High Tea”, and my task was to go on to various events websites and add the event. This seemed simple enough, but very time consuming. After finding the event websites, signing in or joining up to the site and then writing the invite. It took quite a while. I was getting worried that I might have been taking too long to complete my first task but once talking to Lucy, she said that it was a long process and had to be done. SO that calmed my nerves a bit.

My next task was to send emails to ministers of the WA government inviting them to another event Via Appia are hosting. In dealing with the ministers I was informed of how they like their emails to be personalised so for each of the 100 or ministers I had to change the details in each email. A long process.

My last task for the day was to think up story ideas for a journalist who wanted to write something about an event which Ambassador Bleich was attending. I found this the most challenging for the day as I wasn’t sure who Bleich was plus in what direction they would want their story and of my ideas were that interesting. If anybody had any hints on how to think up story ideas. Send them through haha.

Next Week I am helping out with the ambassador Bleich event, so my next blog may be more exciting.
