Friendly Advice!

Hi Everyone,

My internship has been with Manikinn. Manikinn is an up and coming Australian Fashion label. Throughout my internship I have done everything from writing newsletters and blogs to taking photos and filling product call outs. I loved my time at Manikinn but (and I’m sure you’ve all experienced it) there were certain challenges.

In the fashion industry it is important to remain professional as you will come across a lot of people with very strong views and personalities. When I was at Manikinn I had contact with a magazine representative (who shall remain unnamed) that was not exactly pleasant. I had to keep smiling and be as polite as possible even if I felt the need to do otherwise... I got great support from the Manikinn team who assured me that you get that a lot in ‘the industry’.

I think we’ve all faced a few hurdles along the way of our placements. Something that we will all encounter at some stage in our professional careers is personal conflict. There’s no doubt that sometime we’ll all interact with someone who may not like us or who we may not like. But it’s not up to us to put them in their place.

It is so important to remember that you’re working for a business. If you get on someone’s bad side you are not only hindering yourself but the face of the organisation you are working for. It could mean a loss in business for you or your company so it’s imperative to remain calm and professional at all times. No matter who you’re talking to. If you’re ‘on the clock’ you need to ensure you act polite and like the perfect employee!

Has anyone else faced a similar hurdle?

Hi Natalie,

Sounds like a great placement you have! Although I'm in a different industry (at the City to Surf), I can still understand how frustrating and unpleasant it is to deal with some people.

As interns, it is our job to reply to emails and answer phone calls- and as an event with 40,000 participants, it is extremely hard to satisfy and meet the needs of ALL of these individual's requests. I've dealt with several unhappy people on the phone, but it is crucial to remain professional and answer to them as best you can. Sometimes you just feel like slamming the phone down, or biting back at them, but at the end of the day, it's these people that can make your day that little bit more eventful and there's always hurdles we have to face.

I definitely agree with what you said, that you're representing the company, so you need to remain professional! Good luck with the rest of your placement, hopefully you won't need to deal with that client again!

Looks like you overcame your hurdle with ease, good on you for keeping calm. It can sometimes be hard. There are always ups and downs to an industry. With mine, training its the politics!
