My first few days at Amnesty

Hello Blggers

I am Darla from Charles Telfair Institute (CTI) and I am currently at Amnesty International Mauritius Section for my internship.

Why Amnesty? That was actually what several persons asked me when they got to know I was doing my internship there. But to tell you honestly, I myself did not have the answer to that question three weeks ago. The idea of Amnesty (NGO) as an organisation for my internship never crossed my mind before. But here I am, with already 10 days through my internship and I am just loving it.

Working for Amnesty is really something amazing. In the beginning, I did not know much about Rights, Declarations, Conventions or even the campaigns of Amnesty. I was quite confused. Fortunately, I was given the chance to follow the Human Rights Education Course during 4 consecutive Saturdays. Even, the staffs are friendly and helpful. Now, I can say that I am much aware of the organisation and the work being carrying out. Consequently, I am better able to cope with my tasks effectively and efficiently.

After 10 days at Amnesty, I have observed that there is a big different between university life and the place of work. I have even noticed from a PR perspective that the way of carrying out the tasks is quite different compare to what we used to do in class or for our assignments. As an intern my first task was to make media clippings. But here, instead of looking for articles ON the campaign or the organisation, the main focus is on articles RELATED to the campaign.

Over the past weeks, I had the opportunity to work on several tasks with different people in different context. This has helped me to put into practice what I have learned at university. Till date, one of my challenging tasks was to write an article in French for the Défi Quotidien and I was just shocked when it really appeared in the paper. Another thing I have taken note on is that Research is extremely important in the real life context for the success of a project.

I am just happy and excited about my internship.

Just stay tuned and I will keep you updated about it!!!

Hello Darla,I am glad to hear that you are enjoying your internship as much as I did at Sun Resorts Ltd. I totally agree that the PR we did at uni is quite different from how PR practices are carried out in reality. In fact, I was really scared and sceptical if I would be able to deliver what I was asked to at SRL.

Well referring to the media clippings, even I was assigned with this task and I must admit that it is quite time-consuming and requires much reading and research to find the appropriate clippings which best suit your organisation. Well keep on the good work and also keep me updated on the different projects you have been assigned to at Amnesty.

Cheers.

Contributing to an organisation like Amnesty must be eye opening both in the personal and PR aspects. I too have to agree, it seems at university we only learn a fraction of what is really out there especially with digital media. Cant wait to hear more about your placement.
