My firm has officially combined over the weekend and it has been an amazing experience witnessing the media buzz that is created around the combination of the Minter Ellison Perth office and Squire Sanders.
As you can imagine, it has been important for our team to capture the media coverage and monitor the local media in general.
I thought I would use this blog to reflect on how the Business Development and Marketing team monitors the media. Each person in the team is responsible for media monitoring on one day of the week, there is a set schedule and everyone is allocated a day. We sign up to the WA Business News daily alerts and scan the below newspapers;
- The West Australian
- The Australian Financial Review
- The Australian
- WA Business News (weekly publication)
I find this method great as it spreads the load across the team and doesn't place the pressure on everyone to read the paper every day. It is also a great learning curve for me!!
What do other work places do?

Hi Jess.
That sounds like a really effective method as everyone in the company is kept up to date with the current issues, changes and general news. It also sounds like such a great experience for you as you'll be up to speed with everything and gain a greater insight into the company and it's happeneings. Definitely would help with presentation skills and confidence!!
In a work placement I did previously (not for this unit), I was in charge of maintaining the media file, which basically required me to log in to a media monitoring website and download all the relevant articles from within WA. This was a huge task as it meant browsing for articles from EVERY newspaper, radio segment and TV segment from every town in WA- some of which I'd never even heard of! It was great for me as I was able to learn immense amounts about a variety of topics, however the marketing coordinator was only interested in the spreadsheet I created which compared the number of media articles to the same time the previous year.
I found this a little disapointing as (being a not for profit charity) they weren't interested in the content or quality of the articles, just how many were published. Perhaps the method you discussed would be better for them to implement in the future!
Sarah.
Hi Jess,
Media monitoring is definitely essential for any organisation and it is an important aspect as the media portrays the organisation/ client/ event to the public.
At the company that I was interning for, we monitored media through various publications such as The West Australian, Sunday Times and even community newspapers. Dealing with mostly film PR, we also monitored the movie reviews that were available online such as Access Reel and Quick Flix.
Once accumulating the various media, we then organised the coverage by release dates and compiled them into one large PDF file for each film. This definitely made it much easier for future accessing.
I hope you're enjoying your time at the organisation.
Goodluck to you in the future!
Media monitoring is considered as a strong tool in public relations and it needs patience and time management.
i also did it every morning at the office, the routine work kinda gets a bit boring though, but very essential...
