Sun Resorts Placement: Details on Major Events...

Hey again,

So bloggers as promised some more details on the events in which I was involved and in which I helped during my internship namely:

  • Dodo Trail 2011
  • Shoot me I'm famous night at Bombora Night Club, Long Beach
  • Marlin World Cup 2012: Website creation with SRL's Web Master
  • Blue Penny Exhibition in Berlin
  • Interview of Chefs: Upload photos of their latest recipes and write their biography texts for specialised magazines.
  • Facebook events: Mauritius Standard Bank Open, International Jockeys' Weekend 2011. I had to send invites to all my contacts and mostly to people from the equestrian world.
My internship was very challenging and stimulating especially when the big boss turned up! In the beginning, we were all very cool in the office but when the Group Sales and Marketing Manager returned from his holidays, my workload became heavier and he would set deadlines for each and every task...Welcome to the hard reality of the corporate world I said to myself! But experience wise, it was a very good thing for my future career as in the PR world, respecting curfews and deadlines are crucial for the consultancy's corporate image and reputation.

Now time for some more details on the major events of the group mentioned above.

The Dodo Trail 2011 known as the most authentic Mauritian trail is composed of three categories:
  • Dodo Ultra Trail
  • Ti Dodo Trail
  • Mini Dodo Trail
The Dodo Trail consists mainly of three fabulous tracks (80-33-10 Kms) crossing the island, from the South to the West. These extreme sportsmen,"The Dodo Trailers", participating in this challenge, come from different countries of the world. With regards to this event, I helped organising the press conference which was held at La Pirogue Hotel and also had the opportunity to attend it and took fabulous pictures of the event. I also helped in drafting the press release among other little tasks assigned to me.

We learnt how to organise a media conference during our various lectures but experiencing a real one was something totally different! Previously, I attended several meetings with the organising committee of this event but this time, I was in charge of welcoming the press reportersalong with the hotel manager and my colleagues, taking some snapshots and giving away the press release to the reporters present there. No need to say that we could not start on time and only few journalists could attend the conference as there was a major press conference being held for the Indian Ocean Island Games in Seychelles at the same time. These are major negative issues which need to be handled tactfully by PR practitioners.

The great thing about this is putting into practice and experiencing all what I have learnt at uni.

Through the different meetings and press conferences I have attended during my internship, most of them have covered a wide range of issues from community engagement (CSR Expo at Mer Rouge), social and environmental impacts, general public affairs, hotel marketing etc.

The second major event in which I was fully involved is the Blue Penny Exhibition in Berlin. Sun Resorts Limited is the main hotel partner for this major event; offering air tickets and free accommodation in its latest resort, Long Beach. This is a good example of how PR fits into a hotel's marketing plan.

Generally, hotel public relations includes activities such as press relations, special events planning, targeted outreach for focused editorial coverage, organisation of press trips (which I did prepare for Destiny Magazine and DeKat and KYK Net), newsletters, community relations and philanthropy.

The power of public relations in today's world is well proven. Ironically, PR took the place of huge marketing budgets which have considerably decreased over the last few years. During my internship, I had the opportunity to experience how PR indeed fits into a hotel's marketing plan as I worked on several press releases and press trips with regards to the opening of the group's latest resort, Long Beach on the east coast of the island.

Well bloggers, guess I have been bit long this time...

All and all, I have really enjoyed my time at Sun Resorts Limited and I really found it weird to be at uni again with the heavy workload of assignments awaiting me.

Cheers.

Hey thanks Amy...indeed my placement at Sun Resorts Limited has been the best I ever had till now; in terms of experience and skills development. Well it is true that PR is definitely a less expensive cost item as compared to other marketing tactics and on top produces more beneficial results.

Wish you all the best in your future career and hope that you enjoyed your internship as much as I did.

Cheers.

Hey Aniksha... seems that you've helped in organising lots of events. Sure its really stressful, specially when the big boss is around. And one thing is for sure: the preparation of the media conference was a great opportunity and you've learnt loads of useful PR tips from it.

All the best,
Manishka

Hi Anicksha

Through your post, we can feel that you've had a great time at Sun Resorts. I am doing my last days and I've learnt so many things and I've got a nice experience into the PR field.

I wanted to highlight what you said in your post about how Public Relations nowadays replace marketing budgets as it is so true. There has been a shift today, as companies have understood the essential role of PR and its importance for them to survive into the market place.

In my opinion, the internship has given us the opportunity to 'feel' how important is in the present time, the Public Relations department in a company.
