Who am I? I am Super-helper!

AAWB is a small company with only 8 staffs including the boss and me. All of them have a double major degree with Journalism except the accountant. Unlike those large companies with many different departments, our staffs do not simply work within one specific area, but also help each other when any of them in need of help. The purpose of my position is to provide administrative and event support to the Event Coordinator, but my duties for today was a little bit different from usual.

Today my manager is not in the office and she just left me with a memo telling me what I have to do today. There was not much workload and all I needed to do is reply the emails, fill in and print out some document, collect a parcel from post office and posted the letters. When I finished my work and got back from the post office, it was 10:50 a.m and I started thinking what should I do in the following 5 hours? I looked around the office and I noticed that Anita, one of the marketing and journalism officers, was absent today. That is the reason why everyone was extremely busy and not even had a minus to appoint me work.

I gazed to their computer and what they are doing is familiar to the assignment I did in the university, as I am major in Journalism and Public Relations. Therefore I walk to a senior officer’s front desk and ask her if I could help anything. She look at me for three seconds without a words, which made me nervous, then she smiles and said it was so nice to hear that and she chose some relative easy works for me. I helped her classified all advertisements, including covering jobs, courses, holidays and announcements, put them in the document columns. I also send emails and give calls to those companies which request for advertisement modification and resent them the finalized advertisements preview documents.

It was 4:15pm when I almost finished my advertisements editing and my manager came back from the clients meetings. She saw me sitting with the senior lady.
Manager said: ‘Oh! Is Winky helping you ?’
Senior lady: ‘Yes. And she is doing a great job. She is a super-helper.’

I was so happy that I can applied the knowledge and technique from the school to the real life and I found that it is a mistake to think working with a large business company is the best choice once we graduated. Instead, I do think working in a small business is a good idea to start our career, the reason is listed as below:
1. Ability to learn about all parts of the business operation
2. Ability to work independently
3. Ability to learn directly from the senior
4. More responsibility
5. Less red tape and more flexibility
6. More casual atmosphere
7. Getting noticed/getting credit for your work

Working side by side with your boss is a good thing. Boss always give motivation with words they say...good job, thank you for helping..etc, those are words that boss usually use and they give confidence...thats true, we have to start by working in a large companies.
