My first two weeks Internship Experience

Hello world,

I am Charlotte Chui Chun Lam, student from Charles Telfair Institute in Mauritius. I am studying a Bcom in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management and Public Relation. I am actually doing an internship in Public Relations in a well known luxury hotel's group the 'Sun Resorts Ltd'.

My first day at Sun Resorts was a flurry of activity. In the morning, I had a meeting to introduce myself to the team and to figure out what I would start working on, at least for the next few weeks or so, and after that I spent the day getting my office and computer set up and beginning to sift through the code base. I remember feeling completely overwhelmed, I was thrown head over heels into a new code base using a framework I wasn’t familiar with and given a task to do using that framework within that code base.

However, all the other employees in the communication department were very understanding and were always willing to answer any questions that I had and helped me at any time. After a few days that feeling of being overwhelmed started to fade, and as I began to feel at home and accepted among the team.

My first tasks have been to update a media list both on a local and regional scale. This is really important to have an updated media list for example when organising a conference or any event or for sending press releases. Developing strong media relations is a common PR practice in this type of organisation and these are one of my principal tasks.  Also, I have done some benchmarkings among our main competitors about their presence on different social medias.

In the meanwhile, I have been moving around to the different hotels of the group. I went to the Sugar Beach hotel found in the west of Mauritius, to meet a South African blogger for a media coverage of the hotel. Also, I have been to the east of the island , at Le Touessrok hotel to take some pictures to post on social networks and blogs. Updating facebook pages of the different hotels and blogs are a good strategies in order to arouse the client's interest.

Hence, I have been charged of several interesting tasks since I am here. It is a great pleasure to work in a dynamic and evolving department with such an assiduous team. Please find below web addresses for hotels whereby you can access the blog and Facebook by clicking on 'Community'.

Hi charlotte,
I hope you are well and enjoying your internship. Your experience at sun resorts seems to be exciting and fascinating which includes full of work to prepare and organize. For sure, your internship had contributed to ensure that your studies were applied in your everyday tasks. It is true that when someone enters in a new atmosphere of work because no matter what your first job is, the first day at work is a nerve-racking experience and I had the same feeling about my internship. As our internship enables us to apply our knowledge, I think will share the same point of view that the days spent at work increased our skills such as communication, leadership and the way we handle work with professionalism. I am sure that you feel at ease now with the work to be performed and personally I find that your internship was full of adventure mainly your media coverage for the different hotels of sun resorts. Hence, I wish you good luck for the upcoming events and for your internship.

Hello Charlotte,
Your works at Sun Resorts seems interesting and challenging. What I find interesting is the fact that you have been able to apply with ease the public relations techniques learnt throughout these last semesters. I find it very interesting to go out of the office and visit hotels and learn how to work on the image of these resorts. We learn as the days go by and I am keen to hear more about the challenges you faced along your internship at Sun Resorts. I wish you good luck for the rest of your internship and the upcoming challenges.

Good Morning Charlotte

While reading your post, I felt very familiar with what you have been through in terms of this feeling of discomfort that you faced during your first days at Sun Resort.

When I first arrived at IMS, I was shy and I even hesitate to mingle with the other employees. However, like at Sun the team at IMS gave me a warm welcome making my anxiety go away very quickly and i now feel part of the team.

Relating to your experience, I find it very interesting as you had the opportunity to put in practice what we learnt in class. I find your internship very rich in experience and full of challenges. I believe these experiences will provide you with the required materials to succeed as a future PR professional.

So, enjoy your internship
See you soon for a new adventure.
