Award & Scholarship ceremony, Graduation ceremony and Graduation VIP lunch

Recently the whole Corporate Communication Department was busy preparing the award & scholarship ceremony, graduation ceremony and graduation VIP lunch. Tons of fact sheets, speeches given by the VIP and media releases had to be prepared before the ceremony took place. The award & scholarship ceremony took place on 26th April in the Grand Ballroom of the Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club. The formal event is to give recognition for students and staffs of the university who have achieved academic or professional excellence, outstanding extracurricular activities and community service contributions including students who made it into the Vice Chancellor’s List and graduating student ambassadors of the John Curtin Leadership Academy, Curtin’s elite leadership programme. Scholarships from Curtin and its industry partners, as well as individual donors, will also be presented to deserving students. Being part of the committee,  my responsibility during the night was to deliver fact sheets and media releases to the journalists from different press companies and assigned seats for them. It was an eye opener for me since I never been to such formal event before yet with the position as a public relations intern. The event also provided opportunity for me to meet a lot of well known people and also deal with journalists.

The graduation ceremony was held on the 27th which after the night of award & scholarship ceremony. The graduation event was jointly hosted by the Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business and School of Continuing Studies with the School of Business and Diploma Graduation Ceremony at the university’s Recreation and Event Centre, which followed later in the day by the School of Engineering and Science Graduation Ceremony. Early in the morning, my colleague and I had arrived to standby for the delivery of the fact sheets, speeches and media releases to the journalists and assigned seats for them. After the event, we had to rush to the grand palace hotel in order to prepare for the Graduation VIP lunch. There were memorandum signing and award giving section during the lunch. There were memorandum signing and award giving section during the lunch. Eight teaching staff of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) received their TAE Certificate IV in Training and Assessment from the Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE (GippsTAFE), Curtin Sarawak’s partner in the conducting of its diploma programme and a registered training organisation in Melbourne, Australia.

Throughout the three days marathon events, I was lucky to have the opportunity to participate in the preparation from the pre-events to events occurred and post events. I have learnt that good preparation makes good event and good media release makes good news. I had experienced new things, met new people and those really helped to improve my communication skill. However, there were still a lot of things for me to learn and I was starting to adapted to the working environment as well as gaining understanding on how public relations department works in an educational institution.

Hope to see your comments! TQ!
