Hi all!!!
I am aurelie fleurie from CTI. This week i just started my internship at IMS which is a communication agency.
Firstly i will tell you about my history..i was contacted by a company and i was so happy and releive to know that i have my placement however one week after the woman told me that due to a merge with a foreing country the company could not take me anymore as no one would be in mauritius! you can imagine my stress!! Me who wanted to do 10 days before going back to uni i had to look for another company! But i remember that IMS had contact me also so i took an appointment with the manager. And guess what?? on the day he got sick and postpone the meeting. I said to myself im soooo unlucky and it made me more stress on the interview day. But finally i didnt have to pass an interview as the director decided to take me base on a phone call and my CV. Hope no one had such experience.
Anyway am sure that you were all stress on your first day. Mine was really nice. I was scare to get into a company where people would not consider me as part of the team. On my first day i discovered the office and the senior manager showed me my little office that i have to share with amazing people. I met my co workers who have been so nice by talking to me and propose me their help. I have a permanent co worker but there is also two part time workers who makes me laugh so much! How is the environment on your side?? I enjoyed going to work this week with music in the office, i even saw some moves from one of the worker and shared life experience with them. What i like is that everyone work in a good atmosphere we all talk while doing our work and everyone is here for the other. I shared that with one of my friend and we conclude that what is good in Mauritius is that PR agencies are quite small and employees are like a family and it is what i felt at work. The senior manager can come with cakes but when we have to work we are all serious. Lets talk about work! This week i updated the target customer list of the company. IMS has a project for the renovation of a shopping center that want to rebuild its image. So i had to research about these potential customers to find out where they are situated in Mauritius so at IMS we can propose them to open a shop at the new shopping center. On the second day i did a bit of advert monitoring in the newspapers and had to calculate prices etc. Quite amazing for me because i never realized that there are so many adverts that sometimes we even don't see. The next three days were awsome! the manager ask me to work on a client for a futur event that will take place in Mauritius. She gave me the requiement list and i had to find by myself the different suppliers such as a model agency, bodyguards, wireless machine etc. I was a bit panic to see this list and found myself lost. i didnt know with what to start but then it was natural. I love organizing events. I enjoyed having contact with companies and feel that you are part of a company. I decided to add to the requirements list things that we learned at uni. I proposed to the manager a risk management document and to include a media strategy plan. It was well apppreciated.
Ah before i leave you im sure you were happy to get the official work email address like me!
Cheers can't wait to read all of your post!

Hey Aurelie,
It’s really motivating to learn about your new experience and it kind of stimulates me to learn even more in the PR field. I find interesting to know that you had to do research about specific matters because I came to be involved in making research too and it made me realize an important skill as a PR practitioner.
Many practitioners think that PR is all about communicating to your clients and finding strategies to meet their needs but truth is that you can’t satisfy these without a base of information and research. With time you must have realized it but nearly everything you do in PR involves this foundation of research and this is a major part of your success and results.
Through my internship and the different things I’ve come to work on, I learned that even research was diverse. You might need to gather research on a client, on a market or industry, on an organization, on competitors of your clients, on different type of news or simply some analysis research that might be helpful to you, depending on the project you are working on and what method you are using to work.
Research is also very important in PR because it gives value to what you say and supports your work in a very good manner. It also proves to your client that you can provide him with an expert advice because you are aware and listen to his or her needs to better target your work. It is also an important part of evaluation and helps you establish better prospects and have a clearer vision of what you are targeting and want to provide.
I think that research is a bit like the soul of our work because it acts like our roots and we always have to go back to it in whatever we do. Whether research is qualitative or quantitative, it is always exciting and interesting to discover and with good research, you can aspire at being a very effective PR practitioner.
I hope that you’ll enjoy discovering the different PR aspects of your internship while I wait to read your next posts.

Hello Aurelie,
I thought I was the only one who had a stressful time securing my internship until I read your post. So by now we must have already learnt not to limit our self when comes to secure a work place. Even if we have already secured a work place by that I mean the person said ok we are going to take you, you should still have plan B which is what if something else happens?SO you do not actually secure your internship until you have secured it; by this i mean you have already started working. I have been thru it and apparently you have been as well. Coming to the second part of your experience, I agree about the research bit. You are ought to do that because research is the very pillar in PR and without proper and prior research, nothing can and will go right. On my part, you will not believe how much research i have done for our different clients and closely monitoring the steps of the competitors because we need to know what they are doing as well. I was amazed when one of my friends who used to work for a communication agency told me they do not really do research and yet it was a very successful organisation. Anyway, I am glad to know you are enjoying your internship.
Cheers and keep us updated :)
