Into the wild, the truth behind practice.

Hey there,

I'm  Beatrice Etiennette from Charles Telfair Institute (CTI) , Mauritius Campus.
I started  my internship on a full-time basis two weeks back and I should say that its been a real life experience. I  choose to do my internship in a PR and Events firm because I thought it'll be more stimulating considering that I am doing my degree in Tourism, Events and Public Relations.  I've been waiting for this internship for long and when I finally got it, I felt scared not to be able to meet my expectations. But when I got to start it, I emerged in a complete new dimension.

The people I've come to work with made my start very comfortable. I started by doing some news monitoring which I thought was boring but it helped me get used to their main clients and their activities. I still have to do the news monitoring everyday and I find it very time consuming but in the end i know it will help me understand the real demands of clients.

The more stimulating part of those two weeks i think was to work on an event and understand how demanding this can be; how organized things have to be and how every detail, from the minor one, is important when planning the event. I also learned to do reports and calculate advert spaces in newspapers, which was interesting because it was a complete new thing i was meant to deal with.

I think the scariest part of it though was when i wrote my first article. I underestimated myself and really felt bad because i knew that my writing was far from being at their level but when i handed my work, they were satisfied with it and i was proud, i felt a bit more important and really felt that i was in the real world. Finally, when i was asked to write my first speech, i had a lot more confidence in myself and was more at ease.

I think that you should all have realized that, but the whole idea that i had of the work, from our lectures, was really eluded when i got to start work. Its like i was left into the wild and i had to survive... but i realize the importance of our learning at Uni during those two years and half, because i could relate every situation to something we did in class, although it was just a base, i could follow every step i made. And i had to survive, but it's not like i was left alone.
I hope you are all enjoying work as much as i do and i look forward to read all of your amazing experiences.

See you soon.

Hello Bea..
Seems like we have almost the same experience in the field! The experience of writing a speech is awesome, right? you feel so important when writing it!
i know what you mean when you say you can relate what we do at work with what we studied during those almost 3 years, because some things really do come back to us, but at the same time, we were, as you said, left into the wild.. I love your post's title, so true!
All the best of luck for the remaining days, i'm sure we'll here more about it :)

Hi Bea!!
As kim said your post title is awesome and describe very well your experiences that you had to face. Talking about the news monitoring it seems very interesting and i hope ill experienced it soon. I made some research about it to understand the reason why it is so important even if it sounds boring. The news monitoring help to get a real picture of the effectiveness of a PR campaign. I'm sure you have done the monitoring only in newspapers but apparently it requires also on a number of sources. The monitoring help enterprises to remain competitive and be certain that all the PR campaigns or even marketing campaign is providing an impact over the target audience. However it also help to manage the reputation of the company because when you are monitoring you will be aware of how company is covered by the the different media outlets and with the development of technology this monitoring can also expand around the world. Nowadays the social media is so important and i think that now it can impact your company image. So it is important not to neglect the social media where customers have more access to your company and can make up an image of the company. For instance when we all look for a company we first go on Facebook and imagine if there is only bad post or some groups are created against your company.
Moreover i also experimented the calculation of adverts and after one hour it was quite fun. I don't know for you but i was quite surprise to see the number of adverts that i don't even take time to look at normally.
To end i would like to add that you should not be scare or underestimate yourself. You have the great opportunity to put in practice what you have learn. Try and if you make a mistake its OK you are there to learn better to make the mistake now than after when you will be working.
Have fun and enjoy!

Hello Beatrice, thanks for sharing your experiences. The things that you were going through were more or less what I was doing as doing as well. In school, I didn't really understand why we have to do all the assignments that were given to us. I reluctantly completed them. But, after starting my internship I started remembering things that I used to do in class. And, it made things easier to follow, as I learn more and more each day. I hope your internship was a blast.
