Public Relations 393 – Blog

28th August 2013 Wednesday
It
has been a week now since I have been working in Curtin Corporate Communication
and my media monitoring skills have been sharpened. T
he usual task here for me is to do Media monitoring. Two days ago I went through around 50 Newspapers of different languages at a stretch. Before leaving I asked Miss Marcella if I could to take some as there was too much media moni
toring to do and press clippings to finish. It is boring to an extent but I like scanning through the papers to find my University’s name and pictures as it makes me feel happy. I feel like a fisherman finding many fishes while fishing! With all this I have been reading more news generally. I used to be someone who wouldn’t read newspapers even being a Media student. It is very shameful; however now I have gotten hooked to it completely so that is one good achievement I got from interning here.

Miss
Marcella taught me to do the excel press calculations. This was initially a bit
confusing as I am not familiar with Microsoft Excel. However with time I
learned to do the calculations at a faster phase. I was also told to place all
the press clippings in the suitable files. So my everyday task is media monitoring,
calculating and storing it in files. I quite like it because there is not one
minute I rest my hand and I feel like I’m doing something productive all the
time.
I
learned that the Curtin Open day is organised by the Curtin Corporate Com every
year and now the 2013 Open day is very close. The open day this year is on the
14th of September which is 2 weeks from now. I got a chance to go to
attend the 2nd open day meeting with corporate communication which
was on the 23rd of August 2013. I couldn’t attend the first as that
took place even before I joined as an Intern. This meeting was in a different
meeting room with people not just in Corp Com but also other relevant people
from the Human Resource Department, and also exterior school representatives
who are willing to contribute their help during the event.
Now
this meeting gave me an opportunity to experience event planning and management
in the real world. Throughout the years of learning Public Relations we did
come across event planning many times however to experience it in the reality
was fascinating. Sitting across a huge table every single individual had a role
to play in. Everyone in the meeting was given a venue layout which had a map of
Curtin University and arrows pointing to different areas where the stalls,
canopies stations and booths were going to be set up in. There was another
checklist that was read out by my boss Mr Nicholas Leong where each staff who
were responsible for their part in the check list had to update. They discussed
the whole days event starting from discussing the program like Mr & Miss
Curtin, Miri’s got Talent, the different sponsors, food, the VIP invitation,
Budget, Logistics etc. Over all this meeting was an eye opener as event
planning in the real world is much more large scale. Every minute detail was
discussed and shared. Therefore this
week was unique, fun and educative.
