Blog- 1 at Curtin Corporate Communication

Public Relations 393 – Blog entry: 1
  21st August 2013 Wednesday

Hi, my name is Sruthi Davis and I am doing Final Semester of Mass Communication and Public Relations at Curtin University Sarawak. As a part of my Public Relations unit it is mandatory for us students to complete a 1 one month Internship at any real organisation. The organisation I chose is Curtin University Sarawak's Corporate Communication department.

Today was the first day of my Internship at Curtin’s Corporate Communication Department. Just like any other Intern’s first day, mine was nerve racking but at the same time exiting! I received a warm welcome into the office by the staff. I looked around for Miss Marcella who is my Supervisor and the corporate communication officer here however I was told that she was busy involving in a recruitment organised by Curtin. My Boss, Nicholas Leong took Marcella’s role and briefed me on what work I had to do for the week.

I was directed to cabin desk with a large computer to work and that was my space in the office.  The office consists of five staff in total including the Manager. I introduced myself to the rest of the staff to my left was Wee Yee Bun (Yee Bun) who is the web designer here and to my right was  Mr Flynn Aladdin and he is the senior Graphic Designer.

As soon as I sat down I was keen to do my told work which was media monitoring. I knew what media monitoring was from the theoretical knowledge I had from PR classes and from my previous work experience at another consultancy. There was a pile of News paper cuttings on my table which Miss Marcella had done and left for me to be pasted. Here media monitoring is not solely about Curtin University but also other competitors like Monash, Swinburne etc. There are three main folders beside me where I had to store the press clippings. The press clippings are divided into four sections. One is Curtins press clippings, one is for Curtin’s Feature articles, one is for the competitors, and one is for Curtin’s advertisements.

After I was done with that I thought of taking a look around the office. I looked at the staff board where there were pictures of the staff in the Hierarchy model with their posts.  There were also interesting clippings and articles. Beside to the board there is a huge shelf which consists of around 60 plus files. These are all previous years’ media monitoring press clipping documents. And then there is a store room where all the not wanted newspaper stacks are kept, banners, boxes, water filters etc where filled. There is a fax machine and two printers.

The attire here at the office is Semi Formal and the working timing starts from 8:00 Am until 5:00 Pm. The rest of the remaining time I got more newspapers and continued to do media monitoring. One confusing aspect on the first day was how to spot news in the Chinese and Malay newspapers as I myself do not read or understand Malay/Chinese. However Yee bun and Flynn told me to watch out for the pictures and stop by if you see the word “Curtin” in the Malay newspapers. The first day was extremely interesting for me and I instantly felt at ease.
