Open Day 2013!!!

Open day 2013 officially happened on the 14th September at 10:00 Am in the morning and ended around 5:00 Pm evening. As you all must have read from my previous post I was so happy that the day finally arrived and undoubtedly it was one of the most fun Open day ever and I am not even being biased! It really was good fun and also a learning experience for me as predicted. Just as it was planned earlier, my job during the day was to Assist Miss Marcella my Supervisor throughout the event.

I was told to be at office at 9:00 Am and I did just that and my first task for the day was to go to the location of the event and place VIP placards on the front row of chairs. After that was pretty much the difficult task that is tagging along with Miss Marcella holding the important papers such as speech list and event schedule to the reporters and Journalists who came to cover the event. We had to wait for all the VIP’s to arrive and give them a good welcome at the entrance.

We had to walk the VIP’ Guests such as Deans, Head of Departments, Sponsors, Pro- vice Chancellor and media representatives to their seats and I got the privilege to sit a row next to them during the opening speech by the Pro Vice Chancellor professor Jim Mienczakowski. This felt great because I felt important as I myself placed the placards for the VIP’s and I myself was considered one. After this there was a speech by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri  Dr. George Chan Hong Nam chair of Curtin Sarawak Council followed by St. Joseph schools Percussion group.  We had to direct the VIP and guest to the Tree planting ceremony after this. There were so many interesting activities and exhibitions set up for the event and I had to accompany the VIP’s along with other corporate communication staff to show around. There was Tibou showcase, fishing competition and many food stalls.

After showing the VIP’s around the different interesting elements of the day I was free to leave and have fun during the day. The rest of the day continued with various events like break dance performance, Miri got talent contest, Lucky draw, Prize presentation for PVC’s Innovation showcase Challenge Trophy, The grand Lucky draw, Zumba Latin Performance and finally Mr & Miss Curtin.

The other privilege or perks of being part of Curtin Corporate Com was I got a free lunch ticket coupon! As I am a foodie I enjoyed this Privilege and utilised it very well!

The whole day was tiring due to all the running around we did however it was all worth it. I am glad I got the opportunity to help out as an Intern during the event.

Hello Sruthi, glad to hear that you're also interning at the Curtin Corporate Comm. Actually we can really learn a lot when we were to assist in different big events held in the school especially ways to communicate with people when dealing with the journalists. Hope you have a great day!

regard,
kim

Hi Sruthi,

I recently was part of organising an event on campus and was also specifically in charge of the VIPs.

I was just wondering how you went about inviting them if that was one of your jobs to?

We personally emailed everyone invitations to the event on the Guild letterhead and emailed it to VIPs due to time constraints but I was wondering if you think a hard copy of an invite mailed is more appropriate?

Thanks,
Shauna

Hi, Sruthi.

Glad to hear that you really enjoy on the event and learnt a lot of things from it.

And yes, this year Curtin Open Day really fun and impressive. Dealing with the VIP's and journalist are a precious and special experience what we cannot get during study life.

Wish you have a nice day.

Hi Kim!
Yes I really learned a lot from this Internship and the Open day event was a great experience and Yes I had to deal with Journalists, directing them to their seats and also handing them the program schedule.

Hey Shauna!
I was just assisting my Supervisor throughout the whole event. I did not have to call or invite the journalists as that was my Super visors and Boss
s duty to.

However to answer your question my Supervisor send a soft copy email invite and phone call invite to all the media present at the event during the process of organising the Open day event.
