My experience at Cannings Purple Strategic Communications has already been very rewarding.
I had previously completed a marketing internship with professional services firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited. My area of studies is Advertising/PR so when the opportunity to intern with Deloitte's media agency came up I jumped at it. Deloitte was a highly corporate environment so it's great to take a step down and be in an office where talking across the room is not frowned upon. The other staff members aren't holding back in making jokes about how my time is free so they may as well give me work.
The staff are incredibly approachable and full of advice about the industry. Had to sign a confidentiality agreement before anything else so you know it's serious business. To this point I've been able to apply many theoretical skills from uni and knowing that you have actually learned something at uni always pleasing.
Lots of these posts are about social media and how some businesses may not be utilising it to their advantage, this can not be said of Cannings Purple. The office is a nice balance of senior and junior team members and social media is a big part of the business. I've been able to use my knowledge of the format to work on preparing a social media masterclass to be taken by executives, which is very fun to play around with.
There is quite a bit of work around the office with a diverse range of clients so I've been lucky enough to sit in on a few meetings to observe how the senior staff conduct themselves. I've been placed with the creative minds in the office and have been able to be a part of the creative process for some running campaigns.
Naturally there are some tasks in excel and not-so exciting pieces of work to be done but there is plenty to keep me interested and on my toes here, especially doubling as an executive assistant and taking everyone's calls while one is on leave.
The timing of my internship is great as there are a few campaigns picking up this week and hopefully I'll have a hand in them one way or another.
Welcome to PR Internship - YOUR opportunity to put everything you have learned over the past years at university into practice and to get a thorough insight into what public relations is like "in the real world". This Blog allows you to reflect on your experiences, share insights with other students across campuses and to possibly give advice and support to fellow students.
