Hyatt's Way of Celebrating CNY

Prior and during Chinese New Year, I had several activities with Hyatt. First, it is the tradition before every festive season, we will pay visits to all the media outlets. All the outles included Asia Times, Overseas Chinese Daily News, See Hua Daily,  Daily Express, The Borneo Post, Utusan Borneo, New Sabah Times and lastly New Straits Times. So before the CNY, we went and paid visit with cake freshly baked by the Hyatt's Pastry Kitchen as our appreciation to the media.

It is very important for Public Relations, in the case of Hyatt, referred as Marketing Communication (Marcom) to maintain the relationship with the Media. Besides the advertisement that Hyatt want to get publish, sometimes we sent out stories of our operation and activities to get free publicity. Therefore, if we maintain good relationship with the media, the stories are more likely to get published. However, in the business world, it is mostly depends on the production from the company to the media. If the company produce many advertisements in the newspaper throughout the year, they are very likely to get free publicity from the media.

On the day 12th of February, two days before my internship ends, we went to Holy Family Residence in Papar to spread the love during the CNY festive. It was fun being able to took part in the 'Thrive' program. At first, we did "gotong royong" to clean up the surroundings of the house. What surprised me was even two of our Director that came along also helped out cleaning the dirt in the drains. This is truly a sign of Hyatt icon, without the difference of status. After that, Director of Sales and Marketing, which is my boss, Reuben Lim gave speech to appreciate the welcoming of the house.

The most interesting part would be the cake decoration in front of the old folks. The cake decoration was performed by Hyatt's Pastry Kitchen chef, Chef Ismail. The decoration won the applauds of the elders. It was also my first time to see the cake decoration live!

the cake decorated by Chef Ismail! Pretty amazing isn't it?

After while, the elders were served with Hyatt's specially prepared lunch which catered to their healthy diet. Meanwhile, we performed CNY choir songs to the elders, which warmed their hearts, some of them even sang along with us!

Before the visit comes to an end, all the elders received "angpau" or so called red packet and daily living groceries. Most importantly the group photo session and a special instant film session for every elder to take picture with the volunteers. Too bad I didn't have the group photo but I do have the photo taken with a popo and my HR colleague,Nuh.

Pretty good right? haha Just kidding. I did enjoyed myself during this trip. I really hope I have a chance to join some event like this soon in the future!

I do agree with you. Media in Miri would most likely publish the news from organisation that regularly purchase their paid advertisement section. Like in my placement hotel, we have this thing called 'media schedule' which we periodically pay for the advertisements.

Very interesting and memorable experience. Our hotel didn't go to old folk home during my placement period but they did do some CSR yet not during this peak season. Too bad for me...=P
