So finally the day came, it was time for me to start my
internship for the Lion’s Eye Institute.
I would be lying if I said I was completely calm, cool and collected-
because honestly I was a wreck.
It was the night before starting my internship and I was
tossing and turning, freaking out about the idea that I have to please my new
boss or I will fail this unit and therefore never get a PR job and will end up
living in my mother’s basement with 27 dogs (because I am not really a cat
person). The tension only got worse the
next day morning, I pulled into work at
7.40 am and met up with the Marketing officer at the Harry Perkins building in
Nedlands, where the office is situated.
She briefed me about what the organization is about and then sent me
down to orientation in the other building. By now we are looking at around 8.35am,
because I was tossing and turning like crazy the night before, my eye lids felt
like 50 kg weights were strained on each one of them.
After a tour of the clinic, second building and the Harry
Perkins building it was time for the real deal! I went back to the Lions Eye
Institute floor of the Harry Perkins building and was given my email address,
computer and website login details.
After lunch, my supervisor, the marketing officer and myself had a meeting
, in this meeting we discussed an upcoming huge inaugural event that is occurring on
May 19th and all the prep work leading up to it, a few of my
responsibilities was discussed and then my miniature assignments for the day
were given to me.
I was asked to liaison and maintain a two way communication with
several different people who are involved in this event, I realized that this
was an area learnt in public relations- an element of stakeholder management.
Social media is a concept heavily studied in public
relations as a method of communications ‘of the future’, so in the days
following I was asked to come up with posts for the organizations Facebook
page, the job was like second nature to me.
Lions Eye releases a 6 monthly tax appeal letter to the
community (community engagement), these are personalized letters discussing a particular eye issue,
this one was on Glaucoma, and kindly requesting a small donation. My supervisor
gave me the task of severely editing the tax appeal letter that is to be sent
out in the next couple of weeks. I
personally love writing, and see myself doing more communications jobs like
these, so I was over the moon excited to
be given the task to edit this document. I will explain more about this tax appeal letter in my next entry!
All in all, my first week at Lions Eye Institute was a
success, I really feel I am starting to settle in and discover my identity in
the organization, or should I see I am really starting to find my roar ;).
Keep you posted !
Bye,
Krithika
