Hello Fellow
Interns,
So the day
finally arrived. I am over 6 weeks into my internship and I can’t believe today
is the day, The Inauguration event that has been highly anticipated over the
past several weeks is here. The Lion’s Eye Institute’s medical research wing
recently moved into the fourth floor of the Harry Perkins Building, located
right next to Charles Gardner hospital. Although LEI had moved into the Harry
Perkins building at the start of the year, the official inauguration ceremony,
celebrating the new milestone achieved by the organization was yet to occur.
Over 300
people were invited, but around 200 people RSVP’ed to the event; the attendees
consisted of VIP individuals such as managing directors of various large
companies and political party members; and therefore special care had to be
undertaken when making preparations for the night.
The event was
a stressful one, making sure everything was running smoothly was really the aim
of the night for the individuals in the Development and Marketing
department. I guess the phrase, “A
public relations professional is like a swan; beautiful, graceful and well
composed on the surface, but under water they are paddling like crazy to make
run smoothly” is completely applicable here.
I
started off the day with me organizing the plaque reveal and stand for a plaque
that was going to be revealed on the night, sorting out 200 name tags into
alphabetical order and then organizing goodie bags for all the guests
attending.
The day then followed
a pattern of running last minute errands but at the end the night was a success
and everyone was very happy.
After the
event and as my internship is coming to a close, I am slowly realising that
public relations does not necessarily have to have a clear cut labelled role in
an organization, public relations is the type of profession that is existent in
so many different type of career labels. Public
relations and communications are very diverse careers and can really be
moulded to an individuals interest. In a way everyone in my department is a public
relations professional, but each colleague is dealing with one primary stakeholder.
Kind Regards,
Krithika

Krithika,
It was wonderful to read about the set-up and running of this major event. I had a little laugh at your quote about public relations professionals being like a swan - I'd never heard it before and I can see how completely relevant it is!
In my placement, I completed a lot of the same tasks as you while helping prepare for our major World Environment Day event, which will be held tomorrow (Thurs 5th). I'm a little nervous about whether it will go smoothly but it was great to hear that your event was a success!
I enjoyed your insight about how public relations can be moulded in so many different ways because it is such a diverse career. I agree with you on this. I've realised that not every public relations professional falls under one specific job description. I think this is what is so exciting about our careers - we can follow it in so many different ways.
I hope your placement has given you some really great experiences!
All the best.
Brooke.
