Events, events, events
This week at GO Communications my team had 3 events over 5
days for different clients, so the week was filled with event preparations, the
actual events and the aftermath of the events. From my previous work experience
roles, I knew how much preparation and time went into events, even if it is
just for one day. However, my experience at GO was a little different. Starting
from 2 days before the event I was given the task to ring all print media
(including English, Malay and Chinese) to confirm they had received the media
invite and to see if they would be attending the event. This task seems simple
enough, however, being in a different country with different languages I did
find I was repeating myself, being placed on hold, transferred from one section
of the newspaper to another and in the end feeling a little frustrated. I did
this task for all 3 events. However, once I had completed this tedious task and
it was finally the event day all the calls, miscommunications and
misunderstandings seemed worthwhile as the people I had called (who RSVP’d)
showed up one by one to the events.
The first one was for “Tourism Victoria”, we attended the
Grand Hyatt in Kuala Lumpur with 2 artists and a chocolatier from Melbourne. I
was in charge of the media registration, a simple task yet it was great to meet
and communicate with local journalists and photojournalists… The free food was
a bonus too!
I was also responsible for media registration at one of
Celebrity fitness’ events we held for the launch of 2 new Zumba routines,
Sentao and Step. This event was a little more relaxed and laid back compared to
the one we had earlier in the week. After all the media who attended had
registered, I was able to watch the fitness classes. It was an enjoyable event
and it was great to see how our team worked to link the media with our client,
Celebrity Fitness.
The last event of the week was for Kenny Rogers Roasters,
which is a restaurant very similar to Nando’s, KRR was launching a new
promotion for Ramadhan. I was in charge of media registration for this event
too. As it was the third event I had done this week I was more confident in my
role. It was a great event to socialise and network with the media as they
taste tested the new meals on offer.
It was great to be able to get out of the office and learn
from firsthand experience at these events. I was able to meet media from
numerous Malaysian, English and Chinese media outlets and gain an understanding
of how our team works with clients and the media.
Until the next post,
Jessie

Hi Jessie,
It's so exciting that you get to experience your internship abroad! I think the best way to learn about working in an international environment is to try it first hand, and it seems you are doing well so far.
Event management is also a big part of the company where I have my internship, so I understand where you’re coming from when you discuss the amount of time and preparation that goes into even the smallest events. Being organised and prepared is SO important for events to ensure the occasion runs smoothly, especially when there’s so many way’s it can all go down hill.
That’s great to hear you felt more confident during the third event, being in the same position. As they say practice makes perfect, and building your confidence will help you improve for the next time you have that role.
Good luck with the rest of your internship!
Tahlia
