I am an intern at Devahasdin public relations. I am also very much aware that I am not the only intern. Chloe is on Mondays and Tuesdays. I recognise her neat handwriting on the handover notes when I come in on Wednesdays. I have never met her, but we share an office email account and I have seen from her friendly messages and attention to detail with assigned tasks that she is excellent at her job. Emma is on Thursdays. She picks up the tasks I didn't have time to complete and usually has them finished by the time I get into work on Fridays. I notice that from Emma's sent emails that she is efficient and bubbly.
There are three of us who share the same desk and one of us is on every day of the week. We are all bright, friendly and capable women.
We use a passover sheet to let each other know how we are progressing on our assigned tasks. We all have a slightly different style which makes sharing the workload difficult at times. It has given me a little bit of an insight into the possible life that I would be living if I was a part-time consultant. It has also shown me how competitive this industry is.
Let me expand further.
I am in the office on a part-time basis now. I have difficulty letting go of my tasks. Despite knowing that the girls are more than capable, I cannot help but to want to follow jobs through from start to finish. I stayed until 6.30 last Wednesday night as I wanted to complete some research.
I worry about little things on the days when I am not there. It is hard to let go. I cannot help but wonder how much harder things will be when the relatively junior tasks I am assigned to become more complex. I imagine some voluntary overtime in my future.
Public Relations is a competitive career path to embark down. The fact that there are three wonderful interns all at the same consultancy proves this. We all had to interview to get the post. We all must prove our value every day. In a few months time we will all be interested in applying for a position.
So many capable graduates; so few jobs.
I wish you all the very best when applying for your future positions. Attitude, determination and hard work are sure to help us. A little bit of luck never goes astray either.
