Hi!
A few weeks in to my internship at Mills Wilson and I absolutely
love it! I can’t believe how rewarding this internship has been for me and I am
only a third of the way in. Working at the firm has confirmed for me that PR is
definitely the field I want to be in and I have already learnt so much.
This week I got to work on a really exciting project for one
of Mills Wilson’s pro-bono clients, Awareness Cambodia. Awareness Cambodia is a
not-for-profit organisation who provides education and accommodation for
children who have become orphaned as a result of HIV/aids.
They have just completed a new US$1 million dollar
Graduation House in Cambodia in order to house and support young adults wanting
to further their education through university or vocational studies. It is the
biggest project of its kind to ever be seen in Cambodia and they are holding an
event to launch the new building this month.
In lead up to the event a lot of ground work had to be
completed including inviting members of parliament from both Cambodia and
Australia and ensuring the media knew about the event and would be there to
cover it.
I got the amazing opportunity to be a part of this. I was
given the task of writing the media release to be sent to the Cambodia media
after the event had taken place, writing up a small A5 brochure booklet that
would be given to all the guests at the opening, as well as a media alert to
invite the media to cover the historic moment.
It was a really rewarding opportunity to have the chance to
work on one event and get to write up a number of elements for it. I really
enjoyed the task and I have received some very positive and constructive
feedback.
Only a small way in to my internship and I am learning so
many new skills and receiving so much inside knowledge that you really can’t
get through studying.
Everyone in the office has a story, some have come straight
from studying PR, to working in consultancy, others have made their way from
journalism and various other avenues, some have been at the firm on and off for
15 years!
They all have so much experience! The wealth of knowledge in
the office amazes me sometimes. Everyone is so on the ball and slowly tapping
in to this knowledge is teaching me more than I ever expected.
I have even had to tap in to my own personal experiences.
Someone in the office caught wind of the fact I had previously worked as a
property manager, and jumped on the opportunity. One of Mills Wilson’s clients
works closely with real estate agencies, so I was asked to write a small blog
piece appealing to PM’s to include in a newsletter that was sent out around
Australia.
Seeing that opportunity in every situation is definitely
something that comes with experience.
I’m finding more and more that experience really is
everything!

Hey alyssa, you sound like you've learnt so much at your internship already, your posts are very insightful! Its great that you got to write up a media release. A charity would be so rewarding to intern at.
