Learning from my mistakes

Learning from my mistakes

In my last posts, I talked about all my experiences and shared with you all the particulars activities that I passed through. However it is to include that mistakes form part of my 20 days of internship. Sometimes it happened that all my outcomes from some activities did not produce the desired result as expected and even created problems to the whole company.

As a trainee, I do not act in a professional manner or used the right words towards all my superiors. I am a PR trainee and here are some of my mistakes:

  •  I took too much initiatives which went wrong. According to this, I should make an effort to ask for clarification. Before completing a task, it is better to ask than starting working and then face errors.
  • I used a wrong sentence in one of my blog and I didn't realize its consequencesI  did everything to be straightforward according to my blog subject but did not think about any damage, I need to accept all the blames and rebuild trust with my boss. Learn from my mistake, be patient and continue to work hard.

  • It happens that I accepted responsibilities but come about that I had no time for it. From this, I learn that I should think twice before accepting any responsibility. I should plan my time more professionally.

Some mistakes we can kick ourselves for afterward because  we could have avoided them.
Other situations are truly unavoidable and are simply the consequential negative outcomes from taking risks and experimenting.

I was lucky to work with my superior. He was always straightforward, explaining me all my errors and how not to do it again. But what is more surprising is that even if you did something wrong, he will give you the same work to do later till you succeed.

From my point of view, these mistakes are the source of lack in professionalism and is why companies employ people with experiences.

.

We can learn invaluable insights individually and collectively from our failures and unwanted mistakes at work.

So what do you do when you make a mistake, especially in your workplace?

Please comment and share with us your ideas.

I thought I would reply to your blog because it really struck a cord with me.

Firstly I would like to thank you for being so honest and truthful. Sometimes I feel people on these blogs portray their internship through rose coloured glasses and you have given a hands on truthful, down to earth account of your experiences.

In saying that, it was great to hear how much you have learnt from your mistakes. I too have experienced the highs and lows from my internship. And have too learnt the problems associated with mistakes.

I have learnt the saying "measure twice, cut once", is the key to success in this competitive, time short industry.

This PR Placement has been a massive learning curve which I am very appreciative with the outcome.

I wish you luck in the final days of your internship and in your future endeavours.

I, like Kimberly, think that this honest blog is a contrast some of other experiences which I have been reading about.

I have made errors during my internship days. I did a follow-up call pitching the wrong media release on my first week. I was able charm my way into being forgiven for such a beginner mistake.

I wrote a media release instead of a news bite; sent media clips to the wrong account manager; complied a media list incorrectly...

Twenty days working 10 hours? That's 200 hours work. One cannot be expected to be flawless for every hour.

The way I tackled my mistakes was with raw honesty - admitting my mistakes and asking for advice on how to handle the situation.

I think that's all we can do.

Hi there,

I think this post was very relatable as mistake are easy to avoid you just have to edit and double check everything, especially being an intern.

Reading this blog made me feel better about myself, because during my internship I to made silly errors that could of been avoided such as spelling mistakes and not taking enough initiative.

I found it interesting that by taking too much initiative led to a mistake, however in my case I was very nervous and shy and did not take enough initiative which was too a mistake, therefore you need to balance between the two and ask but take initiative at the same time.

Thanks for sharing this post, it was very open, honest and genuine.

I wish you the best of luck in the future and good to see you are learning from your mistakes.
