I Used To Hate PR- Now make room

Funny thing- I enrolled in my double-majors of Tourism, Events and Hospitality Management & Public Relations, by ignoring the "Public Relations" part. I had very little, let's be honest, NO interest for PR at all, 2 and a half years ago.

At CTI campus, my dear mate and I (whose name I won't tell for my own safety) used to mock the
PR seminars but over the year have come to refer to ourselves as future "PR persons", but still in a joking mood.
Astonishingly, grades were upgraded to High Distinctions in PR- something I would never even have dreamed of before.

I always had "a thing" for the tourism industry but my previous tourism internship was a total disaster.

2 Months later (later this week) I was starting the first week of my official PR internship at Veranda Leisure and Hospitality Ltd.

This is the BEST job ever!! I am actually doing a "job" that I love, for the first time in my life.
Could I be any more passionate ?

First, the work conditions: the perks of office environment and hours, plus my own brand-new laptop, own internal e-mail address, own telephone extension number and office desk.Could I feel any more important? AND the coffee machine, fuel for PR people (OK, a general assumption).
Also, I get to wear trendy office outfits every day... After all you cannot take the fashion-interest out of an average university student.

Photo taken from my phone: For the Record, Abishek (the team's graphic Designer) joked about my photo skills but it is only a snapshot to show how we treat ourselves all day long.

But above all these details, I am practicing tasks of what became my own interest. I am not pulling myself every morning to the office.
I am pre-practicing my report skills for the final mostly anticipated PR Professional Practice Report.
A B2B & B2C Hotels Blog Analysis! I owe this one to Claire, the department's copywriter, thanks to whom the final report now no longer looks like a big green monster in my mind. It's all about research and structure anyway. The content will come along, so hang in there fellow interns!

And then, I get to go through the social media Admin experience. I feel like a ghostwriter, thrilling! My colleague in charge of online media communications, Jo-Ann, trusted me enough to allow me to draft some online messages for Trip Advisor.

If I start going into details about my tasks, we will be far from reaching the end of this post. So let's rather put some faces to the names mentioned and get a glimpse of the VLH Communications Team
From left to right: Jo-Ann, Valerie (Mrs Our Boss), Abishek, Claire and Amélia (In charge of the press)
From left to right: Mathiew (The Brand Manager), Shailendra (Web Master), and our colleague Nittin, from the IT department.

Working in the Communication department at VLH is dynamic and never boring. We are at the heart of  all communications and matter of fact, there is nothing more beautiful than the art of expression.
Each morning, I go to 'work' excited (Yes, I can easily get haters on my back for that)
It is only an internship, alright.
But now I can imagine what it would be to be paid to do something exciting to me.

It's decided... I am going to be a "PR Person"

Catch you all soon
Wendy

Hi Wendy, I can see that everything is going well for you. It was very nice to read your blog as it was the same experience for me. I did not know what PR was about and if I was learning a double major in PR!!!(Shame on me). The exciting thing is that as for you the tourism industry deceived me a lot. At Maluti Communictions am experiencing what it is to be a real PR officer and I can say that now I prefer to consider myself as a PR person than a tourism student. By the way you are so right, coffee is the fuel for PR persons!!! Hope everything will go fine and impatient to read your future blogs.

Hi Wendy,

Great to hear you are loving your internship. Hopefully it could turn into a job offer then and more than just an internship! I have to admit I didn't know much about public relations either, even after I completed a first year unit in it, was still a bit unsure. But I took a gamble on choosing it as my major and I love the diversity of it. Glad to hear you found an internship that works for you also after your first bad experience. I think a friendly work environment always helps too.

All the best!
