Knowledge, skills, language

It’s the third week of my Public relation internship and there has been barely any task to do but the good thing is that I have noted other things that are relevant to PR as it is to any other jobs.

One thing for sure is that in PR some skills are expected, such as knowing how to use excel, Microsoft word, printer and so on.  Having to print some excel documents I got to research on how to print the excel with all its grid lines. Yep, I did research on how to go about that. I had never printed an excel document before so this was a first. May sound irrelevant but not when you are trying to print something for the first time.

Printing the excel document I found that to have the document printed with the grids I had to change the setting in page layout.

May seem irrelevant but for sure it is to note that technology skills is important.

Being a student aiming to practice journalism language is important too. As the company does most of their work in French there were times when translation was needed. along with other interns we were asked to translate a document from English to french. But unfortunately we we told after having already started working on it that there is no need to do the translation. But something good came out of it. i learned that translation can be done directly from the Microsoft document by simply right click and translate. May sound obvious to those who already knew this but it is through experiences with technology that we make new discoveries and i will probably learn more short cuts along the way,

English happens to be my second language and though having done French in school I am not as fluent in French as I am in English. So when we were told to translate i was willing to give it my best shot despite french not being my first language. And for sure finding out from a fellow intern that the translation can be done directly from the Microsoft word document brought a relief. Though as mentioned we were told that it is no longer necessary to translate the document.

Hello Hannah
I'm happy to read that you are learning new things, and indeed what is the best way to learn than through experiences.
And as I go through your blog post I may have a little idea of your fellow intern who gave you tips and hack on translation. Or am I wrong?
Anyway, the most important detail in your post is your fluency in English, better than in French. So relevant to me! When I was asked to write a press kit in French, it is with much anticipation that I've attached it to mail to my placement supervisor.
I hope that you will learn more through your professional experience.

Hear you soon and wish you a fun, last Back to School day this Monday

Hi Hannah,

I know what you're talking about. I have found myself being asked to use MS Excel along with their formulas then I was asked to use InDesign to make an artwork and I won't go on on my struggle of how I tried to learn by myself how to edit and use their website.

But yeah, I do understand what you've been going through. I think as future PR practitioners, we are expected to be versatile, know about everything, be fluent in different languages (the more, the better!) and most important of all, learn fast. Especially with technology,it has become a part of our everyday use at home and at work.

I hope your past three weeks have been fruitful. Enjoy your last working week there!

Hi Hannah,

Glad to see you are learning new things in excel and how it is confusing for you too to translate things according to task requirements.

I had the same experience during my placement as one the client required to have his press summaries in English. I never thought that translating text from French to English was so difficult as we need to be able to tell story without misleading the reader and at first it was very confusing but as time goes by I get used to it.

Hope you succeeded in your translation task and you enjoyed your intership

Have some fun
Cedric
