Hi colleagues,
I guess some of us are waiting for the Internship to be over I know the feeling and I am counting out the days and the weeks also. I have only two weeks left thus I have to do my best in gathering as much information as I can about the organization. After a phone call at the documentation section, the panic of researching for the first full draft of the report starts. Tell me about it, the information that I need is not available but thank God for the secretary opposite my office to whom we had become good friends was able to pull a few strings . Anyhow during these three weeks in my internship I have learned a lot and today I want to share some of my reflections.
1. Even though I write a at least a press release per day I still have an immense dislike for it.
2. I think maybe in the far future I want to work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for awhile.
3. I am not ready for the world of work.
4. Practice do makes perfect in my case practice do makes it 'not too bad' .
5. Still wondering if I made the right career choice in terms of what Mass Communication is.
6. You don't really need a degree in PR as some of the PR persons that I had the chance to be acquainted with do not hold a PR degree so I am considering if the three years away from family and friends was worth it. Don't get me wrong I do not want to sound pessimistic but that it was one of my things that came up in my mind and I am thinking out loud.
However, the thought of leaving this place is bringing melancholy sentiments to my dearest heart. Just kidding. But Im still going to miss this place and I have been able to put the things that I learned into practice. For instance last week I was able to compile a media contact list for the African Union as they needed it for a AU-EU Ministerial meeting which was hosted on Sunday.Even though it took awhile and my boss needed it urgent meaning before noon I felt a bit pressurized. Thank God for the World Wide Web and Copy/Paste
So for the AU-EU Ministerial meeting I was able to compile a media contact list and after the boss had send the journalists emails I had to give each of the print, radio, t.v and online media centres especially those who have a large audience a call so that I could confirm the presence of the journalists at a meeting....media relations you were good to me.
Lesson of the day: Build relationships with the media, a pleasant attitude will take you far.

Hi Stephanie,
I can sympathise with you when you say “waiting for the internship to be over”. Sometimes doing unpaid work can be daunting, especially if you have a busy schedule, but I think it will be very rewarding once completed.
I found your reflections very interesting and sometimes I see myself in the same boat, wondering if I made the right choice, so you are not alone there.
It is great you have a goal in mind and shouldn’t totally disregard the hard work you have already done.
Lastly I agree with your lesson of the day. If I have learnt anything in my past it is that a pleasant attitude and a lot of patience will take you far in this industry.
Good luck with the rest of your internship
Billie
Hey Stephanie,
I definitely understand what you mean when you say your counting down the days till your internship is over. Even though I am enjoying mine it can sometimes be had to find motivation.
I also found your reflections really interesting as well. One of the biggest thing I think I am finding from internship is that it is showing me what I don't want more then what I do want, but at least yours has given you some idea of what you might like.
Good luck with the last couple weeks of your internship.
Jess
Thank-you Girls, all the best for the report!!
Hi Stephanie,
See that you enjoyed your intership!! Just kidding. you reflection about the importance of having degree in PR make me think about it also. It's true that we had spent 3 years without the guarantee that we will be employed when we finish.
However, during the intership I had seen the importance of those 3 years of studied mass communication as I was able to respond quite effectively and positively to certain situation as I have a better understanding of what is happening around as somehow I can think outside the box and to meet some requirements during the placement.
So, hope you find your way at the end those 3 years
Enjoy the last days
Cedric
