The Perks of Public Relations

Its end of week three for me at my overseas placement at GO Communications. That means I am over half way through my placement here, and I thought I would share this blog about the highlight of my week, and most probably the highlight of my whole experience here too!

If I flashback into our first ever unit of the Public Relations major, which was Foundations of PR, I will always remember my tutor saying "For those picturing the world of Public Relations like Samantha Jones from 'Sex and the City' with parties, events, art galleries and expensive champagne, forget about it,". Its true, Public Relations is not always as glamorous as it is portrayed. Theres a lot of hard work, stress and overtime that goes on behind the scenes before these glamorous parties can be carried out. The true world of PR is made even clearer over them seminars about crisis management, defamation etc etc. My dreams of the Samantha Jones lifestyle was fading fast until my placement in at Go Communication...

I was fortunate to have my 'Samantha Jones' PR moment during my placement, where the three of us interns were invited with our mentors to attend a Campaign Launch for Tourism Malaysia at a famous 5 star hotel. Tourism Malaysia had recently launched their new campaign called 'Deketje' which literally means 'near by'. The whole point of the campaign was to highlight and promote the wonderful domestic travel around Malaysia.

My mentor had spent hours preparing a media release for the event and with the help of my own input and editing, we were able to successfully provide them a piece. In return was an invite to this wonderful cultural event. Its events like these that remind me of the perks for putting in the hard work. The girls and I dressed up in the traditional Malay attire (see the photos below) and headed out for the afternoon to this beautiful event. I have never before seen so many different types of food in one venue! This was an event that opened up another world of Public Relations to me. One where you could see the end result of hard work and one where the banana fritters were perfectly fried!

I hope you are now inspired to reach out for that glamorous PR lifestyle, just a reminder that hard work comes first!
