Done and dusted!

Today marked my last day of my internship at Devahasdin PR, and I know for a fact that I'm going to miss all the girls at the office and miss coming in each day and doing all kinds of industry related work. Tuesday the 22nd was actually meant to be my last day, but I got asked to come in for another day and get paid to work while the girls were all at an event, so that was really great.

The last couple of weeks have really heated up with the amount of work we've been required to do, and I've really enjoyed the challenge of working really hard and being accountable, not only to my supervisor and staff, but to clients as well. Some of the highlights have been getting out of the office and heading down to our client's retirement village to meet the residents and get some photos for the newspaper with them, getting prepared and organised for a big client event, writing pitches and photo opportunities to send to journalists and working on action plans and strategies.

I feel that my confidence in myself has developed a lot throughout my time at Devahasdin PR, as the work that I have done in the office has extended to outside life. I feel a lot more confident talking on the phone at my hospitality job and calling to book appointments,  and I also feel like I have a lot more faith in myself to cope under pressure at my hospitality job, with uni and in other high pressure situations because I know I've completed this internship and done the best I could.

I know I've spoken a lot about the amazing culture here at Devahasdin, but it really makes a difference when you come to work and you genuinely get on with the people you work with. The party at my boss' house a few weeks ago was such a great time, and was really awesome to hang out with the girls outside of work and get to know each other a little better. I feel like I've always been involved, and feel appreciated in that I'm not just seen as 'the intern.'

The highlight of my internship was definitely getting to see my work sent out to journalists, especially with pitching and writing photo op emails. It's a really great feeling knowing that you're the person acting on behalf of the client, and that you're the person who has worked hard to secure that coverage. I can honestly say there's nothing more rewarding than seeing the photos that you took of a client end up in the local newspaper, or seeing the social media plan you spent hours working on come to life when they're actually posted.

So I am sad to say that my time at Devahasdin has finished up, and I've been really surprised with how much I've enjoyed consultancy work. I was always set on working in house, but did my internship at a consultancy to challenge myself and learn a lot in a short period of time. If given the choice, I would say I would choose to work in a consultancy over in house, because of the fast pace and great variety. I'm someone who gets bored very easily and loves to always be busy, so I feel that consultancy life is the perfect fit for me.

Now it's time to start looking for graduate jobs, and I can already notice the impact that doing an internship has had on my experience and skill set. Prior to my internship, I had been looking at communication and PR jobs online, and felt very little confidence in being able to apply for any jobs, let alone complete them. Now I can say that I have worked in a PR consultancy for a month where I've pitched to journalists, compiled databases, attended photo opportunities and worked and prepared for events and feel confident that I can take on any challenges thrown at me! Now to get onto the big task of writing my report! All the best to everyone with the rest of their internships and report writing!

Hi Tayla,

Great to hear that you had an insightful and fun time in your internship position. It was interesting to hear about your experience in a consultancy. I did my internship in house. Which was good because I had the opportunity to learn about and focus on one particular organization. Although, I am curious to know what it is like on the 'other side' working with a variety of clients. I think it would be great to experience that diversity.

I wish you all the best with your report writing!
