For the 3 years of my public relations degree the art of
effective communication has been drilled into me. Manipulating language to
communicate ideas and persuade audiences, using written communication as a tool
to represent my ideas has become second nature. What I hadn’t thought about is
how my verbal skills were influencing the perception of my ideas. I honestly hadn’t even thought about how the
pitch of my voice influenced the way my ideas were communicated, and the effectiveness
that it had until I began my internship at ATOM.
As part of my internship majority of my work was communicating
with suppliers by telephone. This was a daunting thing; I had never been
exposed to anything like this before. After my first round of phone calls I was
beginning to feel defeated, I didn’t feel confident or that I had completed the
task to the best of my ability. Noticing
this, one of my supervisors mentioned that while I was speaking I used an ‘upward
inflection’. At the time I had very little knowledge of what this is, so she
pointed me towards ‘The Eloquent Woman’.
‘The Eloquent Woman’ shares a variety of tips and tricks to help
women with public speaking, credibility and confidence. After reading just one
of her blog posts on ‘upward inflection’ I implemented a few of her tips. Right
away I noticed the difference in the way people responded to me. They were more
intrigued by what I had to say, and become more engaged. I was so surprised
that such little things had such an influence on how I was perceived. I highly recommend ‘The Eloquent Woman’ blog to
any female in the professional sector, no matter what profession.
It is defiantly worth a follow!
