Unorthodox Beginnings

Last week I started my placement for Public Relations and Communications at The Game Sports Bar, which has been eye opening and a critical learning experience.

All ready having worked for the organisation for the past 6 months working in on my first day wasn't filled with nervousness and anxiety. Instead i was relaxed yet attentive in starting to really take a role in the organisation that supports my studies. My desk was already set up from last week so no real surprises here and my morning routine set. I begin with emails...

The small sized company is always welcoming and being part of entertainment and nightlife is something interesting and fast paced. There is space for creativity with events and concepts which crosses over onto my interests and allows me to use that creative side that is not influenced heavily within the coarse.

First up a meeting at 10am with my supervisor and boss Rorie. We were going over the social media schedule. Critiquing past work and coming up with concepts and what to promote. Also getting more in depth with Facebook and ways to work around the new algorithms.

By lunch time we finally have a schedule ready, but just for this week as it is a sports bar advertising and promotional material is fast changing as 1 game ends another is up and coming and world games are constantly on. It is fast paced but energetic and you have to use an understanding of what the publics want to watch.

I feel an added pressure as i already have a role within the organisation. Its not like many other internships. This is my place of work as well i am almost expected to do well. That aside it is shaping up to be a great experience to put all my theory into practise. The size of the organisation makes it easy to stand out and speak as there are only 4 people in the office.

I find this refreshing yet daunting as their really is no where to hide. Let the internship begin.

Hi Tamika,

Sounds like you have a great position. It must be a real advantage to intern with a company that you know inside out and are really passionate about. My internship is with a consultancy, so it can be difficult to change between clients so quickly.

What were some of your tactics when deciding the social media schedule? At my consultancy we try to post on all of our social media platforms at least once per day. Do you find posting more or less is effective when trying to reach followers? I have also been looking into paid advertising of Facebook. Have you been doing the same? Do you think this is an effective means of reaching people on this platform, because you can target audience segments so easily.

I hope you have a great time at your internship. If there are only four people in your office it sounds like you will be able to have real influence.

Lilly.

Hi Lily,

It has its advantages when having to organise functions and events and the continual social media updates. I would love to do work with a consultancy just to experience the difference in style.

Tactics we have used are the use of routine we have established weekly posts such a Weekly Highlights, Tuesday Inso and Throwback Thursday post all common but posted at the same time every week whilst encompassing the sporting theme the organisation stands for. We have found this quite effective.

yes paid Facebook advertising is something we are involved in, with big events we generally will put a budget towards that particular post or event. We use the segmentation to ensure Facebook doesn't try and stop our posts from floating through feeds so ensuring it's within the Perth metropolitan area and ages are set helps with the delivery of posts. Do you have a similar view?

It does have perks but can also be difficult if someone you need is out of the office and your left with no reply, but all a learning experience.

Wish you all the best!
