Events versus Public Relations

Originally I had planned to enrol in an event management major as my primary interest was to work in events management. However I decided to make the most of my commerce degree and  therefore I enrolled in a double major- event management and public relations. Ever since starting the course I had always preferred my event management units, whilst dreading the PR ones (I’ll admit, I'm not the best a PR). However during this last year I have begun to appreciate the fact that ‘events’ is actually part of PR. This internship opened my eyes to see the beauty of the two disciplines combined together.

The first major event that I had the pleasure of working on was PSO’s major sponsor’s ‘Annual Long Service Awards.’  The function was located in the beautiful surrounds of Fraser's restaurant in Kings Park. Even though PSO only provided the entertainment for the night, their participation in this event strengthened the relationship with one of their primary stakeholders.

North Street Music (the other organisation at which I intern) uses events as the main way to attract people to their organisation. NSM is a music management company that wishes to engage and assist musicians in their endeavours within the music industry. 'Song Lounge' and 'Chamber Jam' are two different events where singer-songwriters are invited to share their creations and stories in an intimate environment to a captivated audience. They're hosted at The Ellington Jazz Club on the last two Mondays of every month. This consistency provides North Street Music with a brand in which their public can identify with and belong to.

Over the last couple of days my appreciation for PR has grown and my love for events has deepened. Hopefully my appreciation for PR can turn into love and further inspire me to strategically continue my internship.

Simone, this is interesting. My internship has had a large cross over between events and pr as well and it's been a learning curve understanding how the two industries interconnect with one another. While events planning is very practical and hands on, pr knowledge is required to fathom exactly how the event should be promoted and how it will be perceived by the general public through these promotions.

It is also really interesting working for a company that functions both as an events company and as an events promotor of events independent to our own. It is really advantageous having an on-site marketing team working in this way, it means that all of the events that are produced by the company are throughly marketed as well.

Hi Simone, is it great to hear that you have become more deeply engrossed in the public relations facet of your degree. I too am doing a double major in public relations and event management, although my preference is more focused on the pr stream.

My internship placement has allowed me to also see the direct correlation between the two areas. Given the events during my placement have been quite different to yours. I now have greater knowledge in the use of event for pr purposes. I hope that this learning journey continues and I am able to utilize my degree with a career in both public relations and events.
