Most
of us when we decided to major in Public Relations had the image of Samantha
from Sex in the City in the back of our minds, well its safe to say that a very
high percentage of us are not going to end up living the life of Samantha. But
hey it’s not all bad! This is what I found out during my time at Magnetize,
events are still extremely enjoyable without the glamorous people and delicious
looking cocktails. Unfortunately I was only able to participate in one event
whilst undergoing my placement; however events are usually commonplace within
Magnetize operations. Magnetize believe a well-executed
event can do much more than entertain; an event can instill an emotion,
reaction or value within a audience which remains with them forever and allows
much more communication about a brand than an advertisement ever could.
Recently I attended an event organised by the Planning Institute of
Australia, which was held at the Crown in Perth, this event saw many of the
countries most influential forward thinkers gathering together to discuss the
future for our city and where it will be without extensive planning. There was
a sizeable amount of lead up media to do before the
event, it was crucial to create and send out media releases about the event and
particularly the key guest speakers that would be attending. Our job was to
make sure the event ran smoothly and that it was comprehensively broadcasted on
social media. My key responsibilities at the conference were to
relentlessly take down notes to ensure we had enough content for the post event
media, and to update and maintain the live twitter feed, which was surprisingly
not as easy as I thought. Trying to take down notes and update the twitter was
a test on my ability to multitask and was a fantastic way for me to learn under
pressure, which is in my opinion, is the best way to learn.

Hi Esther,
We might not end up living like Samantha, but hey a girl can dream!
Sometimes its nice to organise events that don't have all the glitz and glam because we get to focus on the cause of the event, and like you said, to create an emotional experience without all the extras.
Your event sounds really interesting, I would have loved to attend. And I hope your relentless note taking was worth it! At my internship we didn't have someone taking notes and trying to write something afterwards was quite tricky!
Hope the rest of your internship was as successful as this event.
Siobhan
Esther, sounds like the event went really well. Good on you for working so hard at your internship with all that note taking and tweeting.
My internship has been almost exclusively in event management and I really love your comment about what Magnetize believes an event should and can do, that "an event can instill an emotion, reaction or value within a audience which remains with them forever and allows much more communication about a brand than an advertisement ever could."- I've found this sentiment to be very true, where the heart of the event and how it is recognised becomes the way the company is then recognised.
Good luck with the rest of your studies for the semester!
Heather.
