To blanket or not to blanket?

Hello Again,

Well Landcare Week has come and gone and all in all I think it went pretty well. There were a few hiccups which were a shame because they were out of our control. During the week we held a seminar at Curtin about environmental sustainability and energy efficiency in the home which had a pretty good turnout.
I am now just over half way through my prac and now feel like I am pretty much settled into the role. In the last few days I have been given more responsibility as I have been talking to many media outlets trying to get the word of our latest event out there. Since I have been doing this part of PR feel that I am finally putting what we have learnt about media liaison and how properly to approach them with a story to good use.

At the moment we I am in the process of calling every radio station in the country to confirm whether they received the media release regarding the Junior Landcare Pumpkin Challenge which was sent out a week earlier and to confirm the contact details and correct press release email on our database. This has made me think about whether the ‘blanketing’ the media approach is the best to take. We have sent out each email individually, addressing the contact at the station when we had those details which has put a personal touch to the emails, however even stations which specialise in classical music or sports have been targeted. I’m just not sure if this is time consuming process is worth the coverage we will get out of it. So far however, the coverage we have got from the stations has been quite significant with many interviews and community service announcements taking place.
It would be interesting to know how much coverage we would have gotten if we only targeted specific media outlets as opposed to all of them.

Apart from this, it has been actually a great task for me to do as I’ve been pitching the story to journalists, providing them with more information, undated the contact list and arranging interviews for them. I’m beginning to get a good sense of how to approach journalists and the process involved in getting the story heard.

Well I hope you are all enjoying your placement as much as I am enjoying mine :)
