A taste of the corporate world!!!

Hey there good people!!!

Allow me to give you an insight of my first experience and the feel of my new job. I have been working with Limkokwing University Botswana for the past month . It was quite exciting as it marked my path in the working field, state of maturity in dealing with responsibilities of handling tasks assigned to be completed in a day. I never really felt like a new comer around my colleagues as all were interested in teaching me their respective work, therefore everyday i had something new to perform.

I was very fortunate because the very first week I joined the organization they organized a workshop on industrial relations and the organization. Guest speakers were Mr Vijay, the director of Human Resource and his assistant Mr Tebatso Hule. All faculties were introduced with their respective positions as well as their job description. This was the very part where i got to grasp much on how they work, the strengths and weaknesses of the organization. I connected with them and was able to distinguish between marketing and public relations in practical terms. I felt like i am already part of them as there was a point where questions would be directed to me and i was expected to answer as if i have been with then all along. I learnt about the organizations union which i really didn’t know how it applies in business field and it is very interesting to know that as employees we have rights and we are entitled to raise our voices at anytime.

I also grasped a lot about employee motivation and compensation, which many organizations turn to forget about but truth is, without people there is no organization and surely without proper conduct there will definitely be no profit and automatically employees will send a wrong message around that tarnishes the reputation of the company. Limkokwing University is one company that is concerned about the health of its employees. They were all given a chance to open up on their complaints and suggest what best to be done in various situations like accidents within the organization and taking leaves during critical situations.

The organisation prides itsself with excellence and would like to progress that way.It was great to hear the staff’s resolutions being on line with taking the university to another higher and even better level. The dress code will forever remain black as it is the image of the school, of which i do not have a problem with because it is corporate, imagine if it was all colours where we all wear rainbow in the office, that is just inviting more destruction and chaos in the office. Expect more of my tasks as a Public Relations intern on my next post!!STAY BLESSED!

Whats the difference between marketing and pr?

Thanx for the question Shannon, this are the minor things we need to take note of in the industry, basically,Marketing is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals.on the other hand,Public relations is a strategic management function that adds value to an organisation by helping it to manage its reputation.

The difference is just in the open, marketing is more into profit and public relations deals with organisation's image in the eyes of partners, clients and people in general.

Hello Sedi

with regards to the corporate color statement. Most, if not ALL, companies/organisations have corporate colors but it does not mean they have to wear that color everyday. Other than nurses, bank employees, guards and others of course as it is an already tailor made uniform. However, with LUCT they do not have a uniform that has been specifically designed, right? Thus they have to buy many clothes in the corporate color-BLACK. Well my comment here is that, I was pleases for the employees when I read this article

http://www.mmegi.bw/index.php?sid=1&aid=5&dir=2009/december/wednesday16

The article states that the employees are no longer obliged to wearing black everyday. However you are saying "The dress code will forever remain black as it is the image of the school..." contradicts that. I hope your organisation is not forcing that on the employees as it would hamper ORGANISATION-EMPLOYEE relations.

You also continue to say "imagine if it was all colours where we all wear rainbow in the office, that is just inviting more destruction and chaos in the office" .

My question to that statement
WHEN HAS DRESSING IN NON-CORPORATE COLORS EVER CAUSED CHAOS FOR MILLIONS OF COMPANIES/ORGANISATION THAT ALREADY EXIST?

There is a formal wear that the working class know it is appropriate, it is NOT in raindow colors.

Thanx for the comment Lena,i want to believe that you are acting as a PR practitioner yet to join the industry, so i expect realism and rationality from you.Limkowking University is a private company that cares of its image in the eyes of media and the public at large. The organisation does employ enterns and other students temporarirly for jobs like radio dj/ presenter and recruitment, and here we are talking about a hyper group that is fashion forward and into colors, think pink, yellow, orange and all, which organisation will actually be taken serius with that. It is not a matter of being forced to wear black or what, it is the organizations policy to show up at work in a presentable manner and yes the color happens to be black. as for the issue of Limkokwing not having a specific design, i feel like it favours the staff since one is not obliged to stick to one uniform everyday, there is variety thus less stress for washing and ironing more often.Limkokwing does not negotiate with staff to wear black but it is a must, they even tell you prior to working.i do not blame you because you might be talking from experience that yellow or pink may work just fine, and your opinion is highly respected. However,it is so unfortunate that in Limkokwing we have a different perspective from yours.

concerning the article that you read:?I am a staff member and i do not see people wearing any other color but black. i believe you are a student at Limkokwing Malaysia and do observe and learn because you showed so much interest.
