Reading through the blog entries, it seems that most people (sorry to those who didn't) have had a really positive experience. This is fantastic and I wish you all the best in the future!
At first, to be honest, I wasn't all that thrilled about completing a PR internship. To me, it was just something I had to do if I wanted to graduate which after 3 and a half years of studying... Yeah that's something I'm ready for!
Despite not being very excited, I knew from the start I wanted to work for either a non for profit organisation or somewhere to do with art and culture. I saw the work experience add for the GGF posted on Blackboard and after reading it and looking into the organisation, I actually did start to get more excited about the internship. Here was this opportunity to volunteer for a good cause and gain invaluable work experience at the same time.
From the start I outlined my interests but stated that I was willing to try my hand at basically anything (except for skydiving... The GGF team will get that) in order to make the most of my experience and truly get an understanding of my strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes. And luckily for me they listened. I was given a great range of tasks to complete including media releases, compiling databases, research and writing phone scripts. One thing that really surprised me was how much I enjoyed the research! It's something I've never really enjoyed at school or uni, but I found it really enjoyable throughout my placement. Maybe because the research wasn't to put into an essay, which I know we all love so much.
I am truly grateful to the GGF for providing me with this opportunity. The amount of support shown to me throughout this experience was absolutely amazing and I learnt so much. Just being able to finally put all of those skills we have been developing for the past 3 years to use is amazing. Prior to this placement, I had never considered a career in PR, I always just saw it as something that could help me along in the career I want. While my ultimate career goals haven't changed, this placement has amounted in me realising it's not such a bad industry and I definitely could see myself working in it some day.
