I’m already in my third week of my internship working with the Curtin Business School in External Relations so I better say nice things or I might not be able to graduate :)
They basically needed me to start straight after my exams finished to help organise such events as the Mid Year enrolment Orientation and Open Day
So I finished my last exam on a Wednesday had 4 days of freedom and then literally I was back at uni on Monday 28th June
CBS external relations basically is the marketing department that of 6 of the business schools (Marketing, Management, Business Law and Taxation, Information Systems, Accounting , Economics and Finance) turn to for it seems anything
Basically anything that the schools want to do they have to run it by External Relations in relations to promotional materials, banners, flyers etc as Curtin University as set guidelines about the fonts that are used, the logos, colours
Actually as a piece of interesting news as of the 27th of July Curtin University of Technology will be no longer – they are rebranding themselves just as Curtin University and are guarding the logo very carefully so no-one will leak it till there release date
CBS has to work with the University and Corporate Communications and liaises with them about any of their promotional material, banners, photos that need to be used etc and it is actually quite interesting to see how everyone interacts with each other
My first day I met the External relations team and I was stoked to find out that I had my own desk and computer area
The girls Chui Lin, Elise and Angela (the head of the department) all made me feel very welcome and at ease
My first week was pretty busy as a CBS Faculty Information Evening was been held on July 1 and I was need to help organise furniture and catering and the layout of the evening and I stayed on at the event and help run it and answer any questions that future students had and at the end of the night help clean up too – that was a long day
CBS was also involved with Linked In where the university invites year 12 students from low socio economic areas to come and listen to some of the lectures speak so they’ll get excited about coming to uni
So that meant they all got a CBS bag filled with information packs, notepads, pens, bookmarks, slinky and lollipops – enter me, who had to make about 500 of these bags up :)
The girls were very apologetic that this was the work they had for me to do but I was willing to do it and if you can’t delegate those jobs to interns then who?
My First week also consisted of:
• Morning tea for the girl whose desk I took over– had to set and cleanup
• Fire alarm – not just a drill but a real alarm, sat outside for nearly an hour
• Making the Linked In Bags and delivering them all to the different business schools
• Had to call Curtin IT services (CITS) twice to set up my own staff email – I’m known as a University Associate
• Lots of walking re: the deliveries
• Get quotes for catering for orientation
• Help write and design invitation for orientation
• Help write and design the brochure for orientation
•Did I mention the walking? Plus pulling trolleys laden with stuff
All in all a pretty busy week (as I’m only doing 3 days a week) but a fun one
so i'll leave you with this:
Why isn't phonetic spelled the way it sounds?
