Momentum Forum Events

Hi everyone!

This is my first attempt at this blog, so bear with me! Well I've been at my industry placement for almost 10 full days now, and it has been non stop since the get go. It's amazing how much knowledge we have stored away just waiting to burst out of us when we get the chance. I feel like I have already put so much I've learnt to good use.

The first point I'd like to make is the importance of being prepared for and getting the feel for interviews. I will admit that prior to this industry placement I had never really sat down for a proper interview with a potential employer. Growing up in a small town meant that I always knew someone and had always been offered jobs without so much as a trial. So when the time came to find work experience (which I needed to do for both PR and for my journalism major) I was very overwhelmed. Not one to often be nervous I felt myself dreading having to answer questions on the spot and articulating well crafted answers. My interviews did however go well, thanks to some advice and practice I got the job! The best advice I can give is to be confident and know the organisation/company well, and know yourself well, your strengths and your goals. I think if you can sell yourself then your half way there!

Momentum Forum Events is an organisation that focuses on the networking of business within the Perth community. Barbara McNaught is the founder and CEO and has been an excellent mentor and boss so far. From day one Barbara has been confident in giving me plenty of tasks and often encourages me to take on more. It was weird from going the class room to a real life working company. On the very first day I was asked to do media clippings, I started the week after the Men in Black Ball, so there were various articles and photo's that needed to be documented. I was also asked to write a media release and answer various emails thanking attendee's for the support.

My main project at Momentum Forum Events is to help organise the annual Pink Ribbon Ball and the Melbourne Cup for Telethon luncheon. When I started Momentum still didn't have a naming sponsor for the PRB, therefore I was busy sending out personalised emails to various companys with Momentum's sponsorship package along with their media package. These packages clearly outlined the benefits for companys to come on board as a sponsor for either of these events. Emails are easy to ignore so I was also given the task of making follow up phone calls and making sure that each recipent received the full package and if they had any further queries to please contact Momentum.

Barbara has been away for the last month and therefore I haven't been working with Momentum so closely. Dropping off flyers has been my go to for this month! I can't wait to get back to work next Tuesday and really get the ball rowling with Melbourne Cup for Telethon (we still need a major retail sponsor). I am also really looking forward to seeing the finishing touches for the PRB!

Will be in touch next week once Barbara is back and things are all systems go again :)

Hi Carolina
You start your internship while we are finishing ours, am finishing mine this week. I like the part where you said we have to be prepared for interviews, this is a good advice. Am working in an NGO, an i was called at around 4pm to come for the interview the following day at 11am, i didn't know much about the organization and i have to read about it before living for the interview, unfortunately at the interview i kept on forgetting the name of the organization and the interviewer kept on reminding me of their name.

It is good thing that you are proposing sponsors to your upcoming event, i think through what you have learn from class you will succeed in attracting them. it is not an easy thing to attract sponsors which means you have to write a very attractive proposal.

Enjoy your placement

Hello!
Your job placement seems very interresting and the events you are asked to work on will be a great opportunity for you to show what you can do!
It must not be easy to find a main sponsor but here again it is a great experience that will help you in your future job.
I wish you good luck!!
