My First Bog- better late than never

Hi Everyone

My first blog post!! better late than never right?

Like many student I had trouble gaining a placement despite starting early, and I was getting very discouraged when the semester started and I had not secured myself a placement. However as Katharina says it is often the students that have trouble gaining a placement that have the most rewarding experiences.

My first few days were spent familiarising myself with my organisation the Town of Cambridge which included reading through the website, council minutes, Cambridge new pages, promotional material for the town and newspaper articles. However soon I hit the ground running and was trying my hand at writing media releases for events that were occurring in the coming weeks. Thankfully my mentors were patient as it took me 3 or 4 goes before I got the style and language right.

Towards the ends of the week things started to get busy and I had a number of things on the go including
Deciding whether it was worthwhile for the Town to be included in the first edition of a new magazine called Perth VIP.- Once we met with the editor and agreed on the project we had to look into what information we wanted to include and source information and photographs.
Sourcing stories for the next edition of the Cambridge News and converting these into chatty news snippets with suitable photographs
Reading through council meeting minutes and deciding on new-worthy topics to be included in the annual report.
Sourcing photo ideas and editing a draft of the annual report.
Writing media releases for local newspaper including- Western Suburbs and the Post.

I’m really looking forward to the rest of my placement and so grateful that there is such a supportive and friendly team environment at the office. Everyone has made me feel soo welcome and appreciated and I hope I can make a worthwhile contribution during my time here.
