Hello Gala Dinner, Goodbye Internship

My internship with GGF drew to a close as GGF’s gala dinner came to an end last Saturday. What initially began as a 20-day work placement became a near 2-month long intern-turned-volunteer experience. 2 months sound like a short time but it sure makes the majority of my time in Perth. I must say, this work placement is certainly one of the highlights of my short stay here.

The gala dinner at Hyatt was the big night which all of us at GGF kept our fingers crossed for. That must have worked somehow, for things turned out rather well. We had a number of very late but extremely pleasant surprises, such as having one of Australia’s richest couples to grace the event and media presence, which is instrumental in getting GGF’s name out into the larger community.

The GGF interns turned up in full force to help out in whatever ways possible. We were in Hyatt at about 5:30pm to ensure that things were in order and were going according to plan. However, even the best laid plans are subjected to Murphy’s Law; anything that can go wrong, will go wrong! The event did not go terribly askew during the night; it just became a little chaotic and confusing, especially when guests started to pour in. The good news was it all happened behind the scene and everything was well-contained (thankfully!). The guests looked happy as they danced the night away while the interns sought after morsels of food to fill their hungry stomachs. Yum. Okay, maybe that was only me.

The gala dinner sure was an eye-opener. I realised that:

1.        1. Planning, planning, planning is of utmost importance and no one can do enough of planning prior to an important event. Every detail, every minute, everyone involved matters.
2.       2. A pre-event briefing is very much required and will reduce the possibility of event complications.
3.       3. Event management is much harder (and less glamorous) than expected!

I am really thankful for the GGF interns. I would liken their presence to that of the assurance one gets when one purchases insurance from a trustworthy organisation. We just knew we had to look out and support one another. I sure hope when I step into my first job, I will get colleagues like them.

For the Global Good!
Joyce

Hello Joyce,

Congratualtions on your event! I hope that it went as well as you wanted it to.
I am a little jealous of your opportunity to manage an event as I didnt get the opportunity to do that within my internship!
I wonder if your skills developed at uni helped with the organisation or were there other specific directions that you had to follow, from Global good?

Congratulations again, and I wish you the best!
Caroline :)
