So my placement at Dine for Life has come to an end. However I am going to remain on the PR team for Dine for Life which is exciting, but we have a lot of work ahead of us, with only one month until the event!
Looking back on my experience I was quite happy with what I had learnt…and what I already knew. I had always worried that in the workforce I would suddenly forget everything I had learnt at uni. But it was quite the opposite, many of the skills taught in units such as PR Techniques and PR Media were spot on with how things should be done in the industry. This mostly relates to writing, structuring and designing media kits and well as developing strategies and tactics. However one thing that I wasn’t totally aware of was the concept of ‘pitching’ or selling your story to journalists. Now this is something that made me extremely nervous (and it still does). None the less I gave it a go this week, when issuing my media kits. I discovered that:
a.) Talking to journalists is not as scary as I first thought
b.) Getting a hold of journalists can be very difficult
c.) You have to be patient, while they consider your story… and don’t pester them too much while your waiting for a response
Overall I think this experience was very worthwhile, and I am glad that is was a compulsory unit because I know it would have been very easy to put off looking for a placement if I didn’t have to. I hope everyone enjoyed their internships as much as I did and took as much from the experience as possible.
Good luck for your future PR careers!
Natalie
